One night, while defending the club against a rival club, that was exactly what happened. After the smoke cleared, not many were left standing, but thankfully, Bear was. He was voted in as the new president the very next day and vowed at that moment to finish what our dad started. He planned to make the Sinners a clean club, which meant running legitimate businesses, and he was working hard to make that a reality.

I shimmied up to the bar, but my eyes were scanning the room for one man. When I didn’t see him, disappointment flooded me. I thought for sure he’d be at this party. He doesn’t attend all of them, but a celebration of a new member was almost mandatory. Bear liked his members to be supportive of each other, and these celebrations were a way to show that. Race would’ve had to have a very good reason not to show up.

“What can I get you, Becs?”

My attention shifted to the prospect behind the bar, and I smiled. “Vodka and cranberry.”

He grinned. “Sure you don’t want something harder?”

I tilted my head. “You tryin’ to get me drunk?”

He leaned toward me on his elbows. “What if I am?”

“Knock it off.”

I wiggled my eyebrows when Bear’s voice rang out. The new prospect stood straight, and his eyes shifted nervously from me to where my brother was standing beside me. “What’ll it be, Prez?”

“Beer,” Bear grumbled.

I threw my elbow into his side and waited for him to look at me. “What was that?”

Bear raised an eyebrow. “He has a job to do.”

I glanced at the prospect and then back at my brother. “I think you scared him.”

He snorted out a chuckle, which made me grin. “Good.”

This time, I laughed. It was nice to see my brother in this kind of mood. Usually, he was stressed and short-tempered. “Why are you in such a good mood?”

“Patched in a new member. That’s good for the club.”

I glanced over his shoulder and watched a big busted blonde walking toward us. Looking back at Bear, I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, I’m sure that’s it.”

He smirked but didn’t say more, so I continued. “Race coming?”

The blonde made it to us and wrapped her arm around Bear’s waist, but he didn’t spare her a glance. I could already tell she wasn’t going to last longer than tonight. “He’s already here. Maybe he’s out back.”

“They have a bonfire going?”

He jerked up his chin and grabbed the beer bottle the prospect slid beside him. I picked up my glass and took a long drink while he spoke. “Yep.” He watched me for a moment longer. “Be good tonight.”

Grinning, I lowered my glass. “Aren’t I always?”

He chuckled and lifted his arm to lay across the blonde’s shoulders before turning and moving across the room. With my drink in hand, I headed toward the hallway that contained the bathrooms and door leading to the outside area.

I’d just turned the corner when I heard my name and stopped abruptly. The voice came from Bear’s office, but the door was closed, and I didn’t immediately recognize the voice, so I pressed my back to the wall and listened.

“Becs?”

A shiver ran over my skin when I heard Race’s voice repeat my name, and excitement filled me. He was talking about me with someone.

“She has her own mind, but you’re not gettin’ in there if her brother don’t like you.”

That was definitely Bull’s voice, but little did he know that my brother was not my keeper. I make my own decisions and mistakes. I was surprised he didn’t get that, considering how long he’s known me.

“I don’t want in there.”

My shoulders deflated when he said what I always assumed, but when Bull chuckled, I pressed closer to the wall, trying to appear casual while straining to hear every word.
