I didn’t say more before I ended the call and shoved my phone back into my pocket. Kneeling, I saw Josie lying on her side, her knees to her chest and her face beat to hell. “Sweetheart, you with me?”

She didn’t answer, and I swore under my breath when Bear squatted beside me and hollered, “Call an ambulance!”

“Josie, honey, talk to me. What the hell happened?” Bear spoke, but my eyes were on Becs who was kneeling beside Josie directly across from us.

“Josie. Oh my god, Bear, what happened?” She gently lifted Josie’s hand and wrapped it in her own. “You’re going to be okay now, Josie. We’ve got you. An ambulance is on the way.”

“Why the fuck was she out here alone?” Bear yelled, and I saw Josie flinch.

“Bear,” Becs whispered before gesturing toward Josie with her head. He understood as did I that we were scaring her.

Bear’s voice was gentle when he spoke again, but I could hear the anger simmering on the surface. “Josie, who did this? Did you know them?”

“No,” she replied, but her expression was pained when she spoke.

Bear clenched his jaw when he noticed what I had. “Can you tell me what they looked like?”

“Three men,” Josie whispered. “Black vests. Big one said to tell you…” She paused.

“Tell me what?” Bear prompted.

“He said…” Her voice was weakening as she spoke, but she continued. “We’re coming.”

Bear’s body jerked. “Fucking Widows.”

“They know,” Bull said behind us. “Knew they were too fucking quiet.”

One glance at Bear’s face told me this one event would start the war he’d been trying so hard to prevent. But this couldn’t be overlooked or ignored. Innocent women did not get hurt on Sinner’s ground.

Not without retribution.

“Why Josie?” Becs asked.

Sirens screamed through the night when I replied. “Fuckers must’ve been watching and saw me take Dozer so no one was watching the parking lot or the door. They probably thought they hit the fucking jackpot when a woman walked out, especially because I’m sure they thought she belonged to one of us.”

Becs’s eyes locked with mine while the sirens got closer. Her expression was filled with guilt, and I wanted to go to her, wrap my arms around her, and tell her none of this was her fault. But she wouldn’t welcome that from me.

Chapter 7

Becs

Holding Josie’s hand, I stared at her face and felt nothing but guilt. I didn’t even know this woman, but I was responsible for the fact that she was currently in the ambulance and speeding toward the hospital. I should’ve never invited her in for a drink, but I wanted to repay her. She didn’t have to stop to help me, but she had, and I wanted to show my appreciation. However, what seemed like a nice gesture turned into a nightmare when she left while no one was paying attention and was jumped in the parking lot.

By none other than the Widows.

They’d been too quiet.

A month ago, the Sinners had sent the message that they were not to be fucked with. It seemed the Widows had gotten the message, considering they had gone silent.

Everyone, including Bear, had let their guard down.

And because of that, an innocent woman was beaten in the parking lot.

“We’re here,” I whispered when we pulled in front of the emergency room doors, but she didn’t reply. She didn’t even flinch when the back doors were flung open, and they began jostling her around. After they pulled her stretcher out, I jumped from the back and followed quickly behind, but was stopped by a nurse when they ran her down a long hallway.

“I’m sorry ma’am, but you can’t go back there.”

Nodding, I watched the doors swing closed but jerked when a hand touched my arm. “Luke.”
