“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Bull.”

When the door opened again, I glanced behind Bull and felt the grin fade from my lips while I watched Race stomp through the door and make his way to the bed. He stood at the foot and put his hands on his hips. His clothes were dirty, and he looked like he’d come straight from work.

When neither of us said anything, Bear spoke. “You comin’ from work?”

“Yeah.” He answered Bear, but his eyes stayed locked on me. “Lunch break.” It felt like his eyes were staring straight into my soul when he watched me and spoke as if we were the only two people in the room. “Feelin’ alright?”

I nodded and rolled my lips together. “Yeah, I feel better today.”

“How’s the baby?”

My eyes filled with tears again, and I bit my lip to keep them from falling. I wanted this to be real. I wanted him to really care because I meant something to him, and maybe he did, but I was having a hard time accepting that.

“He’s okay. The doctor said it’s just one day at a time right now.”

He jerked up his chin. “You get to see him?”

“Yeah.” I swallowed back tears. “I didn’t get to hold him yet.”

Kat smiled sadly and squeezed my hand. “You will soon, I’m sure.”

“I hope so,” I admitted.

“Okay.” Race ran his hand through his hair. “Just wanted to check in.” He gestured with his thumb toward the door. “I gotta get back. We’re behind schedule. The Dimarco boys said to tell you congratulations and not to be surprised if their folks, Jack and Anna, stop by to see you.”

“Oh okay, that’s nice,” I replied quietly, not surprised at all. Everyone in our small town of New Hope knew the Dimarco family. Most of them were even friends with the club, which was unusual because some were cops and some were investigators, but we were all committed to making it work. “Tell them thanks.”

He dropped his hands and tapped his palm against the foot of her bed, then glanced at Bull and Bear. “Probably won’t be around the club the next day or two. We’re slammed.”

“Alright,” Bear replied and stood. “Need to talk to you a minute.”

Race nodded, but his eyes met mine again and held until I dropped them to break our stare. I needed him to go. I was always afraid I was giving away my feelings when he watched me too closely or we spent too much time together. I’d loved him for so long, and I’d gotten good at hiding it over the years, but lately, I couldn’t seem to anymore.

And that scared the hell out of me.

Chapter 12

Race

Pulling up to Bear’s townhouse, I steered my truck along the curb and put it into park. I shouldn’t be here. She’s been home a week, and I’d only stopped one other time because I wanted to give her time to get settled, but driving home from work tonight, I never even thought about it. I needed to see her. My eyes flicked between her Jeep and Bear’s truck parked next to each other. Disappointed flooded my gut when I knew I wouldn’t have time alone with her, but maybe that was for the best. I wanted to push her to talk to me, especially after Bear pulled me aside and told me Becs didn’t think I thought much of her. I had no fucking clue where she got that idea, but it made sense why she turned me away if she really believed it.

I jumped from my truck, walked to the front door, and lifted my hand to knock. It only took a minute before the door swung open, and Bear stepped aside so I could walk in.

“Hey, man.”

I glanced around the room but frowned when I didn’t see her. “She here?”

“In the shower,” he replied. “You sticking around?”

I was surprised by his abrupt question. Bear hadn’t needed me as much lately, considering the Widows had been quiet again, but obviously, something had changed. “I can.”

“I’d appreciate it.” He gestured toward the door. “Gotta go out, but don’t like leaving her alone.”

I jerked up my chin. “I’ll stick around until you’re back.”

“Might be late.”

Suddenly, I had a feeling his abruptness had a lot to do with Josie. She was quickly becoming a big part of Bear’s life, and it was obvious to the whole MC that it pissed him off. Bear was solid and not much rattled him, but Josie Carmichael was rattling him.
