Tossing aside logic, I did a big U-turn in the middle of the road and headed to the field that bordered the clubhouse, but I kept going until I found the opening I knew by heart. It was an old abandoned farm with nothing but an old shack, a barn, and about eleven acres of barren land. It was heaven for a man who needed to burn off steam in the only way he knew. Becs never got back inside to ask why I turned. She just tilted her head back and let the wind blow her hair wildly around her.

I came to the spot I’d cleared to get my truck through the brush and trees and turned. I knew once I went through that, it would open to nothing but space. And I craved space. As soon as I saw the clearing, I shifted gears and accelerated. We flew across the open space, and before I made the turn that would make my adrenaline soar, I reached over and wrapped my fingers in the waistband of her jeans. I wasn’t taking the chance she was too drunk to hold on.

I spun around the turn, flying through the darkness with speed, adrenaline, and her as my only drugs. There was no better high than this. I hit a raised patch of dirt, and the truck lifted from the ground only to land with a heavy thud. Becs threw herself back into the truck, and for a minute, I thought she was hurt until I realized she was laughing.

She lay back on the seat with her head resting on my thigh and lifted her legs so her feet were sticking out the open passenger window. Slowing slightly, I continued to glance down at her smiling face, eyes closed, and wisps of hair blowing when the wind caught them. A rush of emotion slammed into me, and I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from telling her how much I loved her. Looking through the front window, I downshifted one more time before sliding my hand along her hip, finding her hand, and intertwining our fingers.

And then we just drove.

Through acres of barren land with nothing but the moonlight shining down on us. It was as if time had stopped to allow us this moment without anger or animosity. We weren’t fighting. Hell, we weren’t even talking. We were just together. The smile never left her face. I knew that because I couldn’t stop looking down at her. She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen, inside and out, and her spirit only made her more beautiful to me. I wasn’t ready for Becs before, but all that had changed. I was stronger now than I was then. I liked my life. I was putting down roots and planning a future I wasn’t sure I’d ever see before I landed in this town. And I wanted Becs to be a big part of that future.

Glancing at the time on the dashboard, I turned and headed back in the direction of the main road. I’d never told anyone I came here, never showed anyone this side of me, and I had my doubts she’d remember much of it tomorrow, but I’d hold these few moments with me.

I pulled my hand from hers, ignoring the pang of loneliness that immediately followed when I wrapped my hand around the steering wheel. Slowing, I pulled back onto the road while she sat up, turned in the seat, and faced me. “That was so fun.”

When I only nodded, she looked back toward the line of trees and brush hiding that field. “Where were we?”

“An abandoned farm.”

I felt the heat of her stare on the side of my face. “How did you find this place?”

“Kind of stumbled across it a few years ago. Never noticed it, and then one day, it was just there. Like I was just drawn to it or something.” I wouldn’t have admitted that if she were sober because it was too personal and something I held close. Truthfully, I found it when I needed a place to be myself. A place where I could be reckless with no consequences.

“Hmm.” She settled back against the seat and closed her eyes. “Maybe it’s magic.”

I listened to her breathing even out while I drove back into town. It didn’t take long, which disappointed me. I liked just being with her and talking to her. I loved that some of the anger we’d held on to for so long was fading and replaced with something close to friendship. We had a long way to go, but I’d made the decision, and I wasn’t pulling back now.

Turning into Bear’s driveway, I threw the truck in park. Looking over, I could only see the side of her face, but she looked peaceful. Once again, I linked our fingers before squeezing hers softly and calling her name.

Her eyes opened slowly, and she shook her head while looking around. “Oh, we’re home.”

She sounded as disappointed as I felt but pushed open her door anyway. I begrudgingly dropped her hand and pushed mine open as well before following her to the door. She fumbled with her keys, so I used mine to open the door. I quickly entered the alarm code and turned to face Becs, but she was gone. Glancing around, I saw she was in the kitchen with the refrigerator door open.

“You’re not going to bed?” I asked while walking toward her.

“Nope.” She pulled out a wine cooler, twisted off the cap, and took a long drink before pulling the bottle from her lips and holding it out toward me. “Want one?”

“No,” I replied. “Tomorrow’s gonna be a bitch if you keep drinking tonight.”

“It’s gonna be a bitch anyway, so what’s the difference?” She took another long swallow and came around the island to stand by the stool.

I tilted my head. “What do you mean?”

Sadness floated across her expression before she cleared it quickly and smiled. “Just not ready for the night to end.” She put down her bottle and took a few steps until she stood in front of me. “Are you?”

I recognized the look in her eyes, and she proved I was right when she laid her hands on my chest and took another step closer. Her scent wrapped around me, and arousal shot through my body. This was exactly why I’d avoided getting close to her. I had no doubt this was a mistake. She wasn’t ready to take this step, and if she was, I wasn’t willing to take it while she was drunk. Taking a deep breath, I tried to control my hardening cock, but she took another step closer and pressed her body against mine.

Fuck, she felt good. She fit perfectly against me like she was always meant to be there. She slid her arms over my chest and wrapped them around my neck, swaying slightly. Instinctively, I wrapped my arm around her waist to keep her from falling, which only encouraged her to press in tighter.

“Not doin’ this, Becs,” I growled. “Not like this.”

It was as if I issued a challenge when I saw the spark in her eyes. She wasted no time before pressing her lips to mine and dropping one of her hands to lay over my cock. With her lips against mine, she smiled. “We’ll see about that.”

She rubbed her hand along my length, and I groaned against her mouth seconds before my control snapped, and I crushed my lips to hers. Heat raced along my skin when she opened her mouth and I could finally taste her, finally touch her the way I’d wanted to. Running my hands down her back and over her ass, I kissed her hungrily while lifting her and walking the few feet to the island. I kicked a stool out of the way, ignoring its crashing sound before I set her on the island. She dug her short nails into my skin when I yanked her body against mine, settling her heat against my cock. Fire raced down my spine when she once again wrapped her hand around my hardness. With her hands on me, it would only be seconds before I’d rip down her jeans and fuck her hard. I wanted that. I’d dreamed of that and woken up sweating with a hard cock, but I couldn’t do it when she was drunk.

Pulling back abruptly, I put enough distance between us that she had to drop her hand. Her face was flushed, and arousal flickered in her expression, but her lips had my attention. They were swollen and red from the ferocity of our kiss, proving our hunger for each other was uncontrollable, and I reached out to rub my thumb along them.

When she grinned, I pulled my hand away and took another step back. “Gotta go.”
