Becs: I didn’t ask him.

I thought about Becs going to pick up Wyatt alone, and the idea bothered me, so without thinking about the consequences or even what it meant that I wanted to be there for her, I began typing.

Me: want me to come?

I looked out the open front door when I heard a truck rolling over the gravel and saw my crew was starting to arrive. A few more trucks pulled in while I waited for Becs’s reply, but it never came.

“Hey, boss,” Mark said when he walked into the room.

“Morning,” I replied, still not used to the fact that the men called me boss or that I received the promotion to foreman only a short time ago. I was shocked when Ben called me into his office and offered the position, but I wasn’t about to question it. A promotion allowed me to save more money for the house I planned to build as soon as possible.

I’d just started back across the room when I heard a female voice. “Mornin’, boss.”

Grinning, I turned to face Bailey Dimarco. “Mornin’.”

She smiled and leaned her back against the wall. “How was your weekend?”

“I spent most of it here.”

She gestured toward the room. “I can see that.”

Bailey was the only woman who worked for Dimarco Construction, and she was a cousin of Jake’s and Ben’s. We’d had some trouble with a few of the guys giving her a hard time, but once we got rid of the worst one, everything calmed down. And she was arguably one of the best on the whole damn crew.

“You need to take a day off every now and then, you know.”

I thought about tomorrow and smirked. “I just might do that.”

Men continued to trickle in until my full crew stood in front of me. Frowning at my phone, I shoved it back into my pocket and went over the plan for the day. After everyone had their assignments, I walked back toward the sawhorses where I’d been working, doubts about what I’d offered starting to niggle at the back of my mind.

I’d barely started the saw when my phone vibrated. I quickly put it down and pulled out my phone, staring at her response. It wasn’t until I smiled that I realized just how much I wanted the answer I got.

Becs: If you can.

Me: what time we going?

Becs: They said I could get him at eight. You sure you can leave work?

Me: Yeah.

Becs: I have to go figure out how to put in the car seat.

Me: Leave it. I’ll come over after work and do it.

Becs: Okay. Thanks.

Me: See you after work.

I stared at my phone for another minute before hitting a few buttons and putting it to my ear.

“Everything okay?”

Grinning, I looked down at my boots. Ben Dimarco cared about his crew, and it showed because he always answered his phone the same way if I called during work hours.

“Yeah. Gotta ask you something.”

“What’s up?”

I’d just opened my mouth to answer when he swore.
