Ben snorted. “I’ve heard Bear’s got his hands full with a woman who doesn’t like him all that much.”

Grinning, I glanced at the ground and thought about Bear and Josie before meeting his stare. Their relationship may have started one way, but it sure as hell seemed to be changing. “Think he might’ve met his fucking match in that one.”

They laughed, and Ben gestured outside. “We’re gonna go. Take all the time you need. Just keep me updated on when you’re coming back, so I have coverage.”

“No problem.”

They both turned and started back toward Ben’s truck. I was about to get back to work when my phone vibrated again. Pulling it from my pocket, I read the text and frowned.

Becs: Bear just got home and said he’ll help me put in the car seat.

I didn’t take the time to wonder why that pissed me off. I just replied with an okay, shoved my phone in my pocket, and got my ass back to work.

Chapter 17

Race

Walking through the clubhouse doors, I sighed when I saw it was crowded. We’d been gaining a lot of prospects lately, which meant this place was rarely quiet, and I craved some silence.

“You just getting off?”

Turning, I saw Ritz walking toward me and nodded. “Yeah.”

“Fuck, man, you sure have been working a lot lately.”

“They offer the overtime, I take it.” I shrugged. “It’s good money.”

He jerked up his chin. “Want a beer?”

I didn’t want a beer, but I hadn’t sat with the guys at the clubhouse since the baby shower, and I knew the members were starting to wonder why, so I nodded. “Sure.”

We walked to the bar and slid onto stools just as Dozer approached us. “What are you drinkin’?”

I gestured toward him. “What are you doing behind the bar? Why aren’t one of the new prospects handling it?”

“Bear was meeting with them, so I was covering. They just finished the meeting about a minute before you walked in.”

Ritz slapped his hand against the bar top. “Sam Adams.”

“Same.”

Dozer grabbed two bottles and set them in front of us just as Bear approached and called out, “Grab me one too.”

Dozer nodded and set another bottle on the bar. We all took a long drink before Bear turned to me. “Heard you’re going with Becs tomorrow morning.”

“Yep,” I confirmed.

“Appreciate it.” He turned and leaned his hip against the bar top, facing Ritz and me. “I know she does too.”

“You put in the car seat?” I asked, but there was no reason to. He had to know Becs told me he was if I was inquiring.

He narrowed his eyes. “You good with that?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” I answered immediately, but the truth was, I’d been pissed when I read that text, and I still was.

He watched me closely for a moment, and I had a feeling he was going to say some shit I didn’t want to hear, but I was surprised when he continued. “Found her pills the other night when I was looking for her Jeep keys in her purse. I had no idea the shit she was going through. I suspect I still don’t know much of it because when I asked, she was vague, and I know that’s because of what I’m dealing with here at the club. But the one thing she admitted was that you took her to see Kat.” He jerked up his chin. “I appreciate that. And the fact that she let you help her tells me how much she needed someone to be there for her. I can admit I haven’t been the way I should’ve.”

“A lot of club shit going down. That’s why you asked me to keep an eye on her a while ago.”
