Sal: How’s my girl?

I hesitated to answer, but I knew Sal. If I ignored him, it would only encourage him.

Me: Busy

Sal: Heard my boy’s home.

Dropping my head, I closed my eyes and exhaled loudly. This couldn’t be good. Sal had no interest in being a father. He told me that the day I found him and shared the news that I was pregnant. I hadn’t been surprised. His lifestyle didn’t exactly scream fatherhood.

Me: Why are you texting me?

Sal: Just wanted to check in.

Me: Since when? We don’t check on each other.

Sal: You had my kid. Think I deserve to know how he is.

Confused, I looked across the room, trying to figure out how he knew I had a boy or had even had Wyatt yet. I don’t think I even told him how far along I was when I found out.

Me: Do you want to be a part of his life now?

My stomach clenched when I thought he might. I’d spent the past two weeks with Race. We didn’t spend much time together because one of us was usually running out the door to work, but it felt good having him in my life. It felt good knowing I could rely on him to show up, and he was so good with Wyatt that I was afraid of losing what we were building.

Sal: Not right now.

Fear trickled along my skin. Sal wasn’t a man who made idle threats, and even though his last text didn’t sound threatening to most, I knew him. Or at least I knew him as well as he allowed anyone to know him.

Me: What does that mean?

Sal: I’ll see you soon, Becs.

Laying my phone on the island, I sighed but was immediately taken off guard when the doorbell rang. Walking toward the door, I looked through the peephole, already deciding I wasn’t opening the door if it was Sal, but then I laid my forehead against the wood when I saw Josie on the other side.

Shaking my head, I pulled it open and smiled. “It’s you.”

She tilted her head to the side. “Did you forget I was coming?”

“No.” I laughed and stepped back. “Come on in.”

She moved through the door before slipping off her coat and hanging it behind the door on the hook. “I feel like I’m missing something.”

“You are.” I gestured toward the couch. “Sit down, and I’ll explain.”

We both sat, and she smiled. “Before you tell me about whatever is going on, how’s Wyatt?”

I returned her smile. “He’s doing so well, Josie. He had a doctor’s appointment this morning and has gained another pound.”

“That’s amazing, Becs.” She laid her hand on my knee. “But I’m not surprised. He’s a fighter. Just like his mama.”

“Thanks.”

“How are you feeling?” she asked.

I nodded. “Better. Much better, actually. Kat told me that it helps a lot of new moms to journal, so I started that when Wyatt came home.”

“Is it helping?”

“I think so,” I acknowledged. “It also helps I haven’t been doing it all by myself, which was one of my biggest fears.”
