She grinned and sat back. “How is Race?”

I shook my head, but I was chuckling. “He’s good. He’s amazing with Wyatt.”

“And you two…” she asked.

“Are about as confusing as you and my brother,” I finished.

She frowned. “Ugh, that’s pretty confusing.”

“Yeah, but it’s better than it was, and it feels like we’re heading in the direction we both want to go in so that’s something, right?” When she nodded, I continued. “I just don’t want to jump into anything. For the first time in a long time, I want to take my time and do this right.”

“I think that’s the only way it can work,” she agreed. “You two have been through so much together over the years and especially recently.” She tilted her head. “Does he feel the same?”

“Yeah, well, I think so. We don’t get to spend too much time together because of our schedules, but when we do, it seems like he’s okay with what we’re doing.”

“I’m really happy for you.” When I smiled, she studied me. “So if everything is going well, why did you look nervous when you opened the door?”

I took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. “Sal.”

“Sal?” Her eyebrows drew together, and then her expression changed. “Wait, wasn’t Sal the guy who knew Manny?”

“Yeah.” I nodded slowly. “I’m sorry I told you about Manny. I never should have done that, especially considering I didn’t know much about him except that he gave shooting lessons.”

“It wasn’t your fault. I didn’t have to go. I was just scared and wanted to feel like I could protect myself, but I have to be honest. Something shady was going on there, Becs. I don’t know what it was, but the whole time I was there, I felt like I could be in danger.”

“I’m glad you decided not to go back,” I admitted. Truthfully, I hadn’t known it was dangerous. During the brief time that Sal and I actually dated, he had dropped something off at Manny’s, and all I knew was that Manny gave shooting lessons. When Josie mentioned she wanted a gun and to learn to shoot, I didn’t think it would be dangerous, but I should’ve known better.

“Why did you think Sal was coming by?”

“Something you should know about Sal is that he’s actually Wyatt’s dad.”

Her eyes widened. “Oh.”

“Yeah.” I frowned. “But when I told him I was pregnant, he said he wasn’t interested in being a father. I haven’t heard from him since then, and today, he texted me.”

“What did he want?”

“I don’t know. He never really said. But he did say he’d see me soon.”

“And then I came?” She nodded. “Makes sense why you were jumpy. Do you think he wants a relationship with Wyatt?”

Before facing her again, I dropped my head and thought about that for a moment. “I don’t. It’s not who he is.”

“Okay, so let’s try to figure this out. If he doesn’t want Wyatt, then what could he want?” She gestured toward me. “You?”

I frowned. “That wouldn’t make sense either. We were booty calls for each other. We tried dating, figured out pretty fast that we had nothing in common except sex, and that was it.”

“What about the club?”

“What about it?”

“Did he ever talk about it? Show any interest in it?”

My eyebrows drew together. “What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know,” she replied. “There’s just a lot going on right now with the new president of the Widows, and nobody seems to know anything about him. Could Sal have anything to do with the Widows?”

I considered that but then shook my head. “If he does, he hid it well. He never asked me questions about the club or talked about it.”
