She chuckled as we both watched Race hit the landing before he turned to face us, carrying a very sleepy Wyatt. “He was waking up.”

My eyebrows lifted, and I shared a look with Josie, who giggled. “Was he?”

My heart fluttered the closer he came, and I saw Wyatt snuggled in the crook of his arm. At three months old, he was starting to show his personality, and when I saw how he was staring up at Race, I knew he felt as safe and happy with him as I had.

Leaning down, I kissed Wyatt on the forehead before smiling at Race. We shared a look we’d been sharing often, but when Josie cleared her throat again, I broke the trance.

Race turned toward the refrigerator and pulled open the door before grabbing the iced tea. With one hand, he grabbed a glass, placed it on the island, and poured some. Wyatt yawned and stretched his arms over his head before snuggling in tighter.

I was suddenly jealous of my son.

With a heated glance in my direction, he rounded the island and sat on the stool next to Josie. She immediately reached out and ran her finger over Wyatt’s fist while smiling at him, but she’d lost my attention.

Race’s eyes met mine, and heat shot through my body. How could he do that with one look? It had been weeks of shared looks and heat, but I’d been very good at keeping distance between us while I figured out what was going on with me.

I needed to keep that distance for a million reasons.

I was just having a hard time remembering them.

Chapter 20

Race

“Anyone know what the hell is going on?”

Twisting my head, I stared at Ritz and shrugged. I had no idea why we’d been called into an emergency meeting. Bear didn’t often pull us from our regular jobs, but today, when I got a text on the jobsite that we needed to be at the clubhouse within the hour, I knew something was wrong. Luckily, we were shutting down for the day, so I wasn’t leaving Ben or Jake hanging.

The Widows had been quiet since they attacked Josie and their new national president, Hawk, was seen in New Hope. The last I knew, we were gathering more information on Hawk, but I hadn’t heard anything since then. Maybe we finally had some. We’d been waiting for a little over six weeks for any information, and Bear was getting inpatient. I knew he was avoiding Josie for her own safety, but it was pissing him off, and I understood why. I’d spent the past six weeks with Becs and Wyatt, although I didn’t get to spend much time with Becs. When I got there, she would leave to go to work. As soon as she got home, I needed to get my ass to the clubhouse to get some sleep until I decided that was wasted time and started sleeping on the couch most nights. Neither of us talked about it. We just fell into the routine of me being there all the time.

She was tired, and I was tired, but I still got to lay my eyes on her every day, which was more than Bear had with Josie. With Christmas in a week, she’d just asked me to spend Christmas Day with her and Wyatt. I think she was concerned that Bear wouldn’t be around, but I also knew she recognized how attached I was to that kid. The first time he smiled at me when I showed up to stay with him was the seal on my fucking fate. I would give up everything to see that again. The fact that I was in love with his mother only made my fate that much sweeter.

The door shoved open, and I watched Tank, Gunner, and Bear stomp through. Bear’s mood was no surprise, but Tank was wearing an expression that told me the business we were here to discuss would piss all of us off.

Bear rounded the table to his seat at the head and scanned the faces of his officers. “Met Hawk today.”

“What’s that fucker want?” Ritz growled.

“Wanted to tell me he has no problem with our club.”

“Then why the hell’s he been in town?”

Bear laid his hands flat on the table and dropped his head. Sitting up taller, I shifted my attention to Gunner when he began speaking. “He’s been watching the Widows local chapter. Hasn’t liked what they’ve been up to, and he’s keeping them on a tight leash.”

“He have any ties to Viper?” I’d been wondering if Hawk was in town watching us because he was plotting his revenge for the death of their old president.

“None.” Tank spoke, and we all turned to face him. “Hated the fucker. Said he was glad to see him gone. He’d had plans to end him, but we beat him to it.”

“We haven’t heard from the Widows so it sounds like he’s doing what he says,” Ritz surmised. “Why the hell did you call this meeting?”

There was silence until Bear lifted his head and faced us. “We’ve got a rat.”

I sat up taller, as did every man around the table. “How far they get in?”

“All the way.”

I glanced around the table, knowing damn well it wasn’t any man at this table.

“Who?”
