I took a deep breath and gathered my thoughts. This room was filled with men just like the men in the club, and I knew how to talk to them, but I wasn’t sure how to begin. “I was hoping you might be able to help me with something.”

Jax watched me closely before he spoke. “And…”

I had no idea how he knew I was holding back, but he obviously did. “And not tell Bear.”

Jax sat back in his seat, and Brody spoke. “Is there a chance you could be hurt?”

“I don’t know,” I answered honestly.

“Why don’t you go to the police?”

“I don’t really have much to go on.” When they were quiet, I continued. “Look, my brother and your brother Luke have somehow become friends. Considering he’s a cop, I can’t go to him because I know he’d tell Bear, or if he didn’t, that would definitely come between them. I don’t want to be the cause of that.”

“Why don’t you want Bear to know?” Jax asked.

“Because it might be nothing.” I sighed. “And because he’s dealing with a lot right now.”

“We heard about Skinner.” Striker, another member of their team, spoke up. “And Josie.”

“How?”

“Make it our business to know.” Shifting my attention to him, I saw he was focused entirely on me. “Smart to always know what’s going on around us.”

I understood what he was saying. Even if I didn’t tell them why I was here, they would eventually find out. Like my brother, they wanted as much information as they could get. Bear said it was the only way he could protect the club and its members, and I got the impression that was how this team felt about the entire community.

“We won’t tell Bear,” Jax said, and my head snapped toward him in surprise. But when he held up his finger, I knew there were contingencies. “Yet. But if we need to involve him for your safety, we will.”

That was fair, considering they had no idea what I was about to tell them. “Okay.” When Jax jerked up his chin, I exhaled heavily. “When I found out I was pregnant, I went to the father and told him, but he said he didn’t want anything to do with the baby.”

“Piece of shit,” Striker muttered, and when I looked around the table, I noticed the others seemed to echo that sentiment.

“Yeah, he is, but I wasn’t surprised by his answer.”

“He back with a different answer?” Brody asked.

I shrugged. “Maybe.”

“If you’re asking us to take him out because you don’t want him in Wyatt’s life, that’s not really something we do,” Jax said.

“Some of us do,” Striker said, and I grinned, although from the look on his face, I doubted he was kidding.

“That’s not why I’m here.”

“Then go on.”

I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly before continuing. “He showed up at Bear’s place, where I’m staying, and said some weird shit about how insignificant things can become important and that he’d been watching me.”

“You afraid of him?” Brody asked.

“I never was before, and I’m not sure I’m as afraid of him as I am of what Bear will do if he finds this out.”

Understanding crossed Brody’s face. “You’re protecting Bear.”

“And Wyatt,” I answered.

“Is Wyatt’s father dangerous?”

“I don’t know,” I answered honestly, but I was a little embarrassed. “We dated for about a month and after that just hooked up sometimes. He said he was in real estate, that’s all I knew, but he drives a really fancy car.”
