We’d been driving a while when Tank spoke again. “Surprised you invited your dad to move here.”

“Me too,” I admitted.

“What changed?” he asked.

“Not sure.” I stared ahead. “Guess I just figured I got a second chance. Why shouldn’t he?”

“You think you’re gonna get a third chance?”

I heard the teasing in his voice and smirked. “I’ll get her to forgive me.”

“Sure you will.”

“You don’t think so?”

He snorted. “Actually, I think you both deserve her forgiveness.”

“Not sure what that means, brother.” I chuckled.

He joined in, but then stopped laughing and pointed at the side of the road. “What the hell?”

Walking along the side of the road was a woman outfitted in a fancy dress. Tank looked around, and I knew he noticed what I had—there wasn’t a car along the side indicating she’d broken down.

“Pull over,” Tank instructed, but that had already been my plan. We were on a backroad heading to New Hope, and there was a good chance another car wouldn’t pass for a very long time.

I pulled up alongside her, but she didn’t look our way. Tank frowned and gestured in front of her. “Pull over in front of her.”

I sped up until we had put a good bit of distance between us, pulled off the road to block her path, then parked, and we both got out. She still hadn’t looked up. Instead, she had her head down and was quickly walking toward us.

As if she just sensed us, her head snapped up and she stopped walking. Looking behind her, she did a full circle until she faced us again. We were almost to her when Tank called out. “You need a hand?”

She pointed at herself. “Me?”

Tank held his arms out to his sides. “Don’t see anyone else out here.”

She frowned. “I feel like I took a wrong turn somewhere.”

He put his hands on his hips. “Your car break down or something?”

“I don’t have my car. I kind of left in a hurry.”

That sounded really odd. “Where’re you heading?”

“I’m not sure.” She rubbed her hand over her forehead. “California maybe? Although I’m not sure that would be far enough.”

Tank paused and his eyebrows drew together. “Do you think this is the way to California?”

She huffed out a laugh, but at the same time, her eyes filled with tears. “I don’t even know where I am. I just started walking and figured I’d eventually get somewhere far from here if I kept at it.”

“Where were you?” I asked.

She pointed behind her. “At a country club in Butler County.”

“How long have you been walking?” I glanced behind her. “Butler County’s at least ten miles behind you.”

“A while, I guess.”

Tank’s head dropped and I watched his eyes scan her dress. A puffy pink dress that was strapless and had a huge skirt that looked very much like a gown for a prom or something.
