She pulled out the sides of her skirt. “I see you looking at my dress.” She looked down. “Pretty, right?” She didn’t wait for an answer before she kept talking. “My sister picked it out. I’m a bridesmaid in her wedding.”

“Are you on the way to the wedding?” Tank asked.

“Ha!” She laughed and threw her head back. “Nope. No way. It should be over by now.”

“Alright, sweetheart, I have no fucking clue what’s going on here, but do you need a ride somewhere?” Tank asked.

She contemplated that for a moment, but then shook her head. “I don’t know you.”

His lips tipped in a small grin. “Can you call someone for a ride?”

She looked sheepish. “In my rush to leave, I also left my purse behind which has my phone and wallet inside.” She pointed behind her. “I’ll just start walking back.”

“It’s gonna be dark in an hour,” Tank replied. “Unless you’re planning on running, you ain’t gonna make it.” His eyebrows rose. “You a runner?”

Her shoulders dropped. “Umm…no.”

Tank yanked his phone from his pocket and handed it to her. “Call someone and try to get a ride. If that doesn’t work, tell them you’re with us.” He gestured behind him toward the truck. “Give them the license plate for the truck. Tell them if you don’t call by tonight, to call the police.”

She looked unsure, but she took the phone and dialed a number. Tank crossed his arms over his chest while he watched her. “Hey, Rachel.”

Silence and then she replied, “I’m fine. I needed some air, and I started walking and just never stopped.” A pause and then she continued. “Yeah, I know. Can you come get me?” She ran her hand over her forehead. “Right. I understand. Two guys stopped to help me. I can catch a ride with them.” She glanced at us and then lowered her voice. “I think they’re fine. They look normal.” Tank snorted, and I couldn’t help but smirk. This girl was not making good decisions. She was lucky we were the ones to stop because it seemed to me that she’d never in her life been in a situation like this. “Just let my mom know I’m fine, okay? When I hang up, I’m going to text you a picture of their license plate. If I don’t call you tonight, then call the police, okay?”

She listened for a minute, but then spoke quickly. “Okay, gotta go.”

After ending the call, she took a picture of the license plate, sent it, and then handed the phone back to Tank.

He took it and gestured toward the truck. “Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?” she asked while walking between us.

“New Hope,” Tank answered. “Ever hear of it?”

“Nope.”

Tank opened the passenger door and motioned for her to get in. Unfortunately, my truck was older, so the front only had a bench seat. I didn’t need much room in the truck, considering I only used it for work, but today a little more room would’ve been nice.

Tank got in behind her and slammed the door closed while she pulled her skirt and tried to pile it on her lap, but it still ended up laying across his lap as well.

Tank shook his head while I started the truck and pulled back onto the deserted road. “You got a name?”

She turned her face toward him. “I’m Jane.” She held her hand out to shake with Tank’s. He slid his hand into hers and held on. “What’s yours?”

“Tank.” He jerked his chin in my direction. “That’s Race.”

“Tank?” Her forehead wrinkled. “Did someone actually name you that?”

I glanced over and saw he was grinning. “No, it’s a nickname I earned in the Army.”

“Oh wow, you were in the Army?” He nodded. “Thank you for your service.”

He opened his mouth but then frowned and dug his phone, which I assumed was on vibrate, from his pocket and hit accept. “Yeah?”

After a slight pause, he pulled it from his ear, and I could hear a woman’s voice. Jane’s eyes widened. “Is that my mom?”

“I don’t fucking know,” he growled.

She waved her hand in the air and whispered loudly. “Don’t say that word. She’ll hear you.”
