“Why?” he asked, and I grinned at the windshield. “Does it bother you?”

“I’m not sure,” she repeated.

“You ever have an opinion that isn’t your mom’s?”

“Hmm…” She smoothed her hand over her skirt. “I’m not sure about that anymore either.”

“Sounds like you have even more to think about,” Tank said.

She huffed. “Yeah, it kind of does.”

It was quiet again for a minute before she spoke. “You have sparkles all over your jeans.”

I laughed again and shook my head when he grunted. “Yep.” I continued to stare out the window but was surprised when I heard Tank ask her something so personal. “How long you date that douchebag?”

“Three years,” she replied quietly. “I turn thirty tomorrow, and all I can think about is how much time I wasted on him.”

“Christ,” he replied. “They got married the day before your birthday.”

She didn’t answer, but I wasn’t surprised. That was a gut punch. What kind of family did this girl come from that no one seemed to care about her feelings? We rode in silence the rest of the way to New Hope, and I finally let myself feel excitement when I saw the sign welcoming us back.

New Hope meant home, but more than that, it meant Becs.

All my thoughts were on how much I put her through over the last three months.

I had a lot to make up for.

And that would start tonight.

Chapter 28

Race

Pulling open the door, I walked into the conference room, followed by Tank, and met Bear’s stare. He sat back in his seat and watched while we rounded the table and slid into our seats.

“Welcome back, brother,” Ritz said.

“Thanks.” I grinned in his direction but immediately faced Bear when he started talking.

“Know it’s late, but I have a few things to go over. Wanted to catch Race before he starts back to work on Monday.”

Ritz snorted. “Plus you don’t sleep, so why the fuck should we, right?”

Chuckles floated around the room, but I noticed Bear didn’t join in. Tank had shared on the drive to the airport that Bear was being a jackass, and it had everything to do with the fact that Josie seemed to be out of his life permanently.

“Took you guys a little longer to get back. Everything okay?” Bear asked.

Still grinning, I gestured toward Tank. “Ask him.”

Tank looked at me from the corner of his eye before facing Bear. “Found a girl walkin’ on the side of the road. Gave her a ride to a hotel.”

Bear studied him for a minute before looking at me. “Wanna give me the real story?”

Chuckling, I nodded. “That’s the truth. She left her sister’s wedding without her purse, so she was walking but had no fucking clue where she was because she’s not from New Hope. We offered her a ride, Tank told off her mom on the phone, and we dropped her at a hotel, which Tank paid for.”

Ritz whistled and then laughed. “Talked to her mom, huh?”

“Shut the fuck up,” Tank replied, but he was grinning.
