Bear shook his head, but he was grinning this time. “Just find out where this fucker spends his time and who he’s doin’ that with.”

Ritz smirked. “No problem.”

“We’ll meet in a week. Go from there.” Bear shifted his attention to me. “You find him, you stand down until I give the order. Our priority needs to be keeping Becs safe.”

I hated that I was agreeing to that, but he was right. Reacting might put Becs in danger, and I’d never do that. Although sitting on this shit didn’t feel right either. “Understood.”

He held my stare, and I knew he could read my expression. It took a lot to scare Becs, and the fact she went to other people told me how scared she really was. I had a feeling if I hadn’t left town, most of this wouldn’t have happened.

This fucker was playing with us.

And one way or another, I was going to shut him down.

Chapter 29

Becs

I pulled Wyatt’s door closed quietly and walked to the top of the stairs. A part of me wanted to go downstairs and get something to eat since I hadn’t had anything since about eleven this morning, but another part of me wanted to just crawl into bed and sleep like the dead.

Knowing if I didn’t eat, I’d wake up with a headache, I went down the stairs determined to make a PB&J as quickly as I could, eat it, and go to bed. I was back to work full-time, but on the day shift. Wyatt was doing well with Maggie, but tonight I had to ask her to keep him a little later because I had two late appointments, which meant he came home cranky. It took me two hours to settle him enough for bed, but I was finally able, and I was off tomorrow, so maybe we could both sleep in.

Hitting the last stair, I stepped down and turned toward the kitchen. I’d just gotten out the bread, peanut butter, and was pulling open the refrigerator door when the apartment door opened. I watched my brother walk through, already anticipating his mood. It was the same mood he’d been in since before Christmas.

“What are you doing here?”

“Need a shower,” he answered. “Kid in bed?”

Rolling my eyes when he didn’t use his name, which was a habit of his, I grabbed the jelly and pulled it from the shelf before closing the door. “Just got him down.”

“I’m gonna grab a shower, and then I’m heading back to the clubhouse.”

“Tonight?” I pulled two slices of bread from the bag and glanced up. “Why?”

“Church.”

Grabbing a knife, I opened the peanut butter jar and slathered it on one of the slices. “You were only home twice this week. When do you sleep?”

“Sleep in the office.” His short answers weren’t all that unusual, but he seemed even more surly than usual.

“Something happen that you’re having church this late?”

He grunted. “Just when everyone could meet.”

He wasn’t being truthful, but he never gave me much information regarding their meetings, so I shrugged it off. I was too tired to give it much thought anyway. Opening the jelly, I slathered some on the other slice of bread before slapping them together and taking a big bite.

Bear made a face. “How the fuck do you eat that shit?”

“PB&J is a classic,” I said after I swallowed. “Why don’t you like it?”

“Don’t like jelly.”

I made a face and took another large bite when he continued speaking. “Heard from Race today.”

I stopped chewing and swallowed hard when his words were like a punch to the stomach. “How is he?”

“Sounded good.”

“Is he coming back?” I asked.
