Her eyes slowly shifted back to Bear, and only then did I notice another woman standing very close to her side.

“He rescued me.” My eyes slid back to Jane, and she smiled shyly at Bear. “I was lost.”

Bear glanced at me before settling his gaze on the other girl. “He rescue you too?”

Her eyes widened, and she shook her head, but Jane was the one who spoke. “No. Sorry, this is my cousin Rachel.” Her attention shifted back to me, and I walked out around the bar. “Umm…I was just wondering if I could talk to you for a minute.”

“Hi, Jane.” Becs moved across the room and held out her hand, which Jane shook. “I’m Becs. It’s nice to meet you.” She repeated the same words and gesture to Rachel.

“Oh, you’re Becs.”

Becs smiled but tilted her head. “You’ve heard of me?”

“We stopped at the hotel where I stayed to ask where the clubhouse was and the girl working at the desk said you cut her hair.”

Becs laughed. “It’s a small town. I think I cut just about everyone’s hair.”

Jane’s shoulders relax as they talked, and I made my way over to stand beside Becs. I gestured back and forth between Jane and Rachel. “Drove all the way here and stopped to ask how to find me. It must be important.”

“Well…” She hesitated and glanced at Rachel, who nodded slightly before facing me again. “I just…I…wanted to pay you back.”

“Pay me back?” My eyebrows rose slowly, and anger coursed through me for some reason. “For what?”

“The hotel,” she replied immediately. “It was really kind of you to do that, considering I didn’t have a phone or purse or anything with me.”

“Don’t want any fucking money,” I replied.

She flinched, and I should’ve felt bad, but I was pissed she was here to pay me back. She was rich. I knew that when I picked her up. Even if she didn’t look rich, which she did, she smelled it. Everything on her and about her was designer, down to her fucking jeans.

Becs slapped me in the chest but was watching Jane when she spoke. “Ignore him. They’re all the same and never want anyone to acknowledge when they do something nice.” Small smiles appeared on Rachel’s and Jane’s faces while Becs continued talking. “It was nice of you to come here to repay him. Where are you from?”

“Riverton.”

“Wow, that’s over two hours from here, right?”

Jane glanced at me, but it was Rachel who finally spoke. “Yeah. We decided to take a day trip, but maybe we should head back now.”

Jane shook her head slowly. “No.”

“Jane,” Rachel replied sternly, “I definitely think we should go.”

Jane turned her focus on me. “You told me to find my own path, right?”

She remembered that. I didn’t expect she would remember anything about me, especially the shit I said, once she returned to her real life. “Yep.”

“Well”—she ran her hands over her hips—“this is a part of my new path.”

I shook my head, but Becs faced me with her hands on her hips. “You told her to do this, then you need to hear her out.”

I shifted my gaze to land on Becs. “You’re starting to piss me off.”

Becs smiled and wiggled her eyebrows. “Just pointing out the obvious.”

“Can we talk privately?” Jane asked softly.

“Bear, is your office available?” Becs called out.

Bear snorted behind us. “Yep.”
