“It’s not a bad thing to love someone, Jane.”

“It is when they can’t love you back. At least not the way you need them to.”

Bree glanced down at her bag and then back at me. “Okay, well let’s at least get you familiar with this couple and what they want for their wedding. I know you can’t do much until your hands heal, but we have time before we need to meet with them and get things going.” She gestured toward my partially bandaged hands. “How are they?”

“They’re better,” I acknowledged. “The areas still bandaged had deeper cuts, but they don’t hurt anymore. The doctor just wants them bandaged to avoid infection.”

Bree nodded. “And your stomach?”

I laid my hand over my stomach and felt the bandages below my shirt. “Same as my hands, except I have a pretty wide gash that needed stitches, so that’s healing a little slower.” I dropped my hand. “I talked to Luke, though, and he said I was lucky. He wasn’t sure how I didn’t do more damage after he saw the window I had to climb through.”

“Do they have any leads?”

“No, not yet.”

She motioned to my wrist. “You’re not wearing your brace?”

“No, the doctor said as long as I take it easy, it will heal. It’ll just take time.”

“That’s something at least,” Bree answered just as the phone rang.

She looked over my shoulder at the phone. “Are you expecting someone else?”

I shook my head and turned. “No, but they have to call me whenever anyone stops, even if they just drop off something for me.”

Picking up the phone, I hit accept and put it to my ear. “Hello?”

“Ms. Williams?”

“Yes?”

“There’s a Shawn Watson here to see you.”

I swallowed hard and faced Bree, but she only tilted her head. I wanted to see him so much that I felt an ache deep in my chest, but by doing that, I only hurt myself in the long run.

“Could you tell him I’m in a meeting?”

“Yes, of course,” the security guard said.

“Thank you.”

I’d just hung up the phone when my cell phone rang in my purse. Bree couldn’t hide her smirk and just shook her head before glancing at the papers in front of her.

“What do I do?” I asked her.

She smiled sadly. “You better at least talk to him on the phone before he gets himself into trouble.”

My phone stopped ringing, but within seconds, it began ringing again. Grabbing my purse, I dug it out and accepted the call. “Hello?”

“Are you okay?” I closed my eyes when I heard the concern in his voice.

“I’m fine,” I answered quietly. “Bree’s here.”

“Okay,” he exhaled. “I need to see you.”

“Why? Is there new information?”

“No,” he replied gruffly. “I need my eyes on you to believe you’re safe.”
