He stepped closer, and I tried to ignore my body’s reaction from being so close, but when my skin flushed, I accepted it was impossible. He got to me in a way no one ever had, especially after we slept together, but it wasn’t only physical for me, not anymore.

And that was all it was to him.

I just needed to keep reminding myself of that.

“You will not be alone until I make sure this fucker is off the streets, no matter how that happens.”

“What does that mean?”

He dropped his head until his lips hovered just above mine. “That means he better hope the police find him before I do.”

“I’m safe here.” I gestured toward the door. “The security is around the clock. I have no reason to go anywhere, so I can stay safe while the police look for him.”

“Thought you were working for Bree?”

“I am, but she brought work to me so I could do it from home.”

“This isn’t your home.”

“It is for now.” I paused before continuing. “And it’s where I need to be. I need to be with Rachel right now.”

He squeezed my neck one last time before letting go and turning toward the kitchen. “Hey, Bree.”

She waved. “Hi, Tank.”

I swallowed hard and watched while he walked toward Bree. “You able to work here?”

Her eyes flicked back and forth between us before she answered Tank. “Actually, yes. As long as we have a flat surface where we can spread out, we’ll be fine.”

He jerked up his chin. “I’m gonna steal her for a minute. You got time to wait?”

Bree’s eyes locked on me, and I appreciated that she waited for me to nod before replying. “Sure.”

He pointed at the hallway. “Bedroom back there?”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “My bedroom is second on the left. I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Alright.” He turned on his heel and headed back down the hall.

Bree lowered her voice. “You okay?”

“How many times have you asked me that since you got here?”

She laughed. “Honestly, I’m not sure what else to ask after that.” I laid my hand on my forehead while she continued talking. “He just wants to keep you safe.”

I glanced at the hallway and lowered my voice. “Is it selfish that a really big part of me wants him here?”

“No.” Her smile faded. “You deserve to have someone here who makes you feel safe.”

“I need to do that for myself, though.” With one more look, I squared my shoulders. “Okay, I’m going to talk to him. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“Take your time.” She held up her phone. “I have emails to answer.”

I walked slowly back down the short hallway until I came to the bedroom and stepped inside. Tank turned from where he was looking out the window. I quietly closed the door while he moved to stand in front of me.

“How are your hands?”

“A lot better.”
