“I don’t really like working on cars.” He shrugged. “Sorry.”

Bear chuckled. “Don’t have to like cars. There are plenty of other trades to learn. What do you like?”

“I like computers, shit like that,” he admitted, but almost like it wasn’t something he was proud of.

“Club needs someone good with computers.” Bear put his hands flat on the counter in front of him. “You got any training?”

“Some classes in high school. Most of what I know, I taught myself.”

“Just thinking out loud.” Bear faced me. “But I wonder if Elite would consider taking on an apprentice. Kyle could teach him a lot of shit.”

“Not a bad idea, brother.”

“Who’s Kyle?” Leo asked.

“Kyle’s the fuckin’ bomb, man,” Dom said, and Leo faced him. “You should see the shit he can do online. He works for a private security company, Elite Securities, and he finds shit no one else can.”

Leo turned to me and Bear. I could see the simmering excitement in his eyes, but he shrugged like he didn’t care. I recognized that. I used to do the same damn thing so no one would know how much I wanted something and take it away. Maybe that’s why Cindy steered him in my direction. She knew my story and thought I would understand better than anyone.

“I’d be okay with that.”

Bear laughed while shaking his head, telling me he picked up on the same shit I had. “I’ll talk to Kyle. Can’t make any promises, but it’s worth a shot. If that doesn’t work out, we’ll figure something else out.”

“In the meantime, shit needs done in the garage.” I gestured toward the door. “I’ll meet you two out there in a minute.”

I watched them leave but turned toward Bear when he spoke. “They’re good for each other. About the same age with the same shitty childhood. Maybe it’ll help them both.”

“Yeah.”

“Nice thing you’re doin’ for him.”

“Doin’ it for Cindy too,” I explained. “She had her demons and battled them the wrong way, but she was a good person.”

“Makes sense now why she didn’t reach out for child support,” Bear added. “You relieved?”

“Not sure how I feel,” I admitted. “But I do know this shit made me think about what I want out of life.”

“Like kids?”

“Like all of it. Relationship. Kids.”

“You figure it out?”

“Not yet.”

Bear studied me for a moment. “You talk to her?”

He didn’t need to clarify. We both knew he was talking about Jane. “Not since I saw her. I check in everyday, but she’s finding nice ways to keep me at arm’s length.”

“That where you want to be?”

“Nope.”

He grinned. “Didn’t think so. You sure this isn’t about not having something you want.”

“And then not wanting it once I get it?” I considered that. “Doubt I’d be working this hard if that was the only reason.”

“Then it sounds like you have a lot to think about.” I chuckled when my own words came back to me, but he looked confused. “What’s so funny?”
