“Said those exact words to Jane.”

He laughed. “What did she say to that?”

“She agreed.”

He slapped his hand against my shoulder. “Sounds like a smart girl listening to good advice.” He dropped his hand. “Came to tell you something else.”

“What’s that?”

“Remember the school-to-work thing you talked about a while ago?”

I ran my hand along my short beard. “Christ, with everything else goin’ on, I forgot about that.”

“Yeah, well, I took it to Josie, who took it to the school board. She presented our case, and the school board agreed.”

“Really?” My eyebrows lifted. “Even with all the shit going on?”

“Not much linked to us. No one except the police, the DEA, and us know we got a call about Jane, and she’s not from this town, so no one paid much attention.” That made sense, but I was still surprised. “The school board told Josie that they respect her position with the school and her opinion enough to agree, plus they know our garage has the best reputation in town for doing the work right. They want their students to learn it the right way and maybe learn more than they could where they are now.”

I sensed he was leaving something out, so I prompted him. “But…”

“They did have some stipulations,” he admitted.

“Like what?”

“Kids can only work during school hours. No weekends, no evenings. The only students eligible will have a release signed by their parents agreeing to off-site training. And it has to be supervised by a school official.”

“Who the fuck is that?”

He frowned. “No idea, brother.”

“Josie know?”

“Not yet. She said she'll let us know as soon as she does.”

“Alright, well, it’s something, I guess,” I conceded. “When does it start?”

“We’re already into October, so as soon as they have a few kids lined up, they’ll call me.” His phone beeped and he dug it from his pocket. “Gotta get goin’.”

I jerked up my chin. “Keep me updated.”

I leaned my hip against the counter while he made his way toward the door, but he looked over his shoulder before he left. “You need anything, you know where to find me.”

I only nodded.

I’d let him know just as soon as I figured it out.

Two weeks.

It’d been two weeks since I laid eyes on Jane, but I wanted to give her the space she asked for, and I decided while I was doing that to do something I should’ve done a long time ago.

I stared at the building across the street through the rain sliding down my windshield, wondering if this was a mistake. When my phone vibrated in my pocket, I leaned back and dug it out.

Jane: Bree and I are working on the wedding venue today.
