“Yup.” Bull nodded. “She started dancing to this shit, along with the other girls, and no one’s changing the music as long as that’s happening.”

“Makes sense.” I acknowledged.

“What took you so long to get here?”

I arched my eyebrow. “You miss me, brother?”

“Fuck, no.” He grunted. “Just wonderin’.”

Chuckling, I shook my head. Bull was rough. He’d been in the club a year longer than me, and he was the only one of us who never minded the illegal shit. I always thought he liked the adrenaline rush, but he had a new source of that rush since being put in charge of running the race track, a brand-new business the club was setting up. Bear didn’t have to say the words, but it was obvious to us that he put Bull in charge of the track hoping it would give him what he was missing.

“The prospects are here,” I pointed out. “And the new members.”

“All fucking kids,” he grumbled. “Never thought I’d say this, but I think I’m too old to party with kids their age.”

I nodded, knowing exactly what he meant. “I hear that.” Lifting my beer, I took another drink. “Doesn’t help that we’re some of the last ones standing.”

“What does that mean?”

“Means we’re the only two from the original members without a woman.” I watched his eyes move over the crowd and knew he saw what I saw. Every man we’ve spent the better part of our adult life with was now involved with someone, and it wasn’t temporary. These women were in their lives, and that’s where they were staying. “Shit’s changing.”

“Yeah.” He lifted his bottle to take a drink, but I didn’t expect him to say more. He was normally a man of few words. I was surprised he’d said this much.

A flash of shiny blond hair caught my eye, and I dropped the bottle from my lips to my side, letting it dangle from my fingers. “Who is that?”

“Who?”

I gestured toward the women dancing. “The blonde in the tight jeans?”

“Came with Tank’s girl.” He looked at me. “Cousin or something.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tank move across the lawn and chuckled when he pulled Jane from the crowd. I couldn’t blame him. She was a good dancer, and the boys here liked to watch. The trouble was if he didn’t claim her, one of them just might. And as much as he denied it, Tank wanted her for himself. He just couldn’t admit it yet.

My eyes flicked back to her cousin, who watched Jane until she couldn’t see her anymore. She was obviously protective, which I respected, and it was only when Becs leaned in and said something to her that she seemed less concerned.

With my eyes on the cousin, I spoke to Bull. “Kat comin’?”

He didn’t answer right away, but I waited, knowing he would eventually. Kat was a doctor the club used for all the members. She’d been with us for a long time, and Bull has always had a thing for her, but he never acted on it, and none of us knew why.

“Don’t think so.” His deep voice rumbled. “Not her scene.”

“She’s as lily white as Jane.” I told him what he already knew. Kat played by the rules. She was a good doctor for the club because she believed in confidentiality, but she would never work for us if she thought we were involved in anything illegal. Maybe that was why Bull never made a move. He knew she lived her life by her own personal code, and it didn’t involve violence.

Violence was a huge part of Bull’s past, and I suspected it would be a part of his future if he needed it to be.

Blaze stumbled by us, and I grinned until I saw where he and some of his firefighter buddies were headed. “Shit.” I pointed at Jane’s cousin. “He’s heading for her.”

Bull shrugged. “Let him. Far as I’ve seen, she can handle herself.”

“Not sure Tank would appreciate that, man.”

Bull frowned, knowing I was right. “Get her.”

I put my bottle on the bar and moved quickly across the lawn, cutting off Blaze who was distracted by a redhead with her shirt already undone. She was an easier target for him tonight, anyway.

I stopped next to the cousin and smirked when Becs announced me. “Hey, look, Ritz is here.”

The blonde smiled, but she stumbled when she turned her body slightly to face me. Reaching out, I grabbed her elbow to hold her steady.
