“He has,” Bear agreed. “And he’s been patient while we got shit settled so we could do this and do it right for him.”

“You mean throw him a big-ass party?” Ritz laughed.

“Why are you bringing this up?” Pop asked, and I smirked. He was wondering the same thing I was.

“Widows have been quiet,” Bear stated, and his eyes landed on Skinner.

Skinner tapped his fingers against the wood of the conference table. “Talked to Hawk. He just got to town about a month ago. He’s planning to make it permanent while he gets the local chapter under control.”

“He’s been true to his word,” I pointed out. “He said as the new national president, the Widows would no longer be an issue, and they haven’t been.”

Bull grunted. “That much power can go to someone’s head. He’s not runnin’ one chapter like Bear. He’s runnin’ the whole fucking Black Widows organization. There are Widows nationally. Can we trust he won’t turn on us like the last president?”

“You can trust Hawk.” Skinner defended his friend.

Bear leveled his gaze on Skinner. “You can because you know him. You served in the Air Force with him. You don’t have bad blood with him.” Bear motioned to the men around the table. “We have a history with the Widows that goes back a long fucking time. I’m not sayin’ he won’t do just what he promised, but I am sayin’ we need to be alert while he’s figuring out who he’s gonna be as their president.”

“His dad was a good man and a good president before he was killed,” Pop mentioned.

“He was.” Bear met Pop’s stare. “But we’re not our fathers.”

“You are.” Pop focused solely on Bear, and I agreed. Bear was exactly like his father had been as a president, and one of the biggest reasons I agreed to stay when Bear was voted in. “Need to give him a chance to be that too.”

Bear ran his hand along his beard. “Hawk has a lot of work ahead of him. There’s a good chance not everyone is gonna like the changes he’s makin’. Hate to say it, but shit could fall back on us, so we need to be smart on Saturday. We do this for Blaze, but I need everyone to pay attention to what’s going on. He’s plannin’ to bring some of his crew from the fire department, but other than that, it’ll just be the club members and prospects. Shouldn’t have any issues, but we’ve said that before.”

We nodded in agreement, and I knew Ritz was about to piss me off when he smirked at me. “You sure this is a good party to bring your new girlfriend to?”

Race chuckled beside me, but it was Pop who spoke up. “You got a girl, Tank?”

“No.” I broke my stare with Ritz and looked at Pop. “The girl Race and I found walkin’ on the side of the road came here to talk to me. I invited her to the party.”

“Why’d you do that, brother?” Ritz asked, just to stir the fucking pot.

Sighing, I sat back and ignored the grins on everyone’s faces. “Because her family’s fucked up, and she’s tryin’ to figure some shit out. Thought it might help her to be around some other people.”

“What’s going on with her family?” Pop asked.

I frowned at Pop. “They’re rich. Treat her like shit. She doesn’t even have a job. Does volunteer work, but her family pays for every-damn-thing. She’s tired of it. Says she wants to do shit on her own.”

“What are you expectin’ she’ll get out of this?” Bear asked.

“Not sure, but I wanted her to have a chance to see how other people are with each other.” I shrugged. “Kind of figure she’ll run like hell after the party and I’ll never see her again.”

“You thought that after we dropped her at the hotel,” Race pointed out. “Seems Jane is full of surprises.”

Bull chuckled. “Fuck, even her name sounds lily white. I’m with Tank on this one. She sees one naked tit, and she’s gonna run for the hills.”

“Oh, lily white describes her perfectly, brother.” Race chuckled. “Doubt the girl has ever stepped over the line.” He glanced at me before continuing. “But it took balls to walk her ass into this clubhouse and ask you for help, so maybe Jane will surprise us all.”

I wasn’t so sure that was true, but I would find out.

JANE

“About a year ago, I made partner.”I smiled politely but casually looked down at the watch on my wrist while one of the most boring people I ever met continued to talk about himself.

It was already after eight, which meant I would be late for my first party that wasn’t with anyone I knew. Well, except for Rachel, who agreed to come with me so I wasn’t driving home alone in the middle of the night. However, I was stuck on this date that my mother set up with no way out of it. Sadly, Richard seemed like a decent man, but I just wasn’t interested.
