With one more long stare, he grabbed a T-shirt from the chair where my jeans had been and tugged it over his head. “Come on, I’ll walk you down.”

“Thank you.”

I followed him down the stairs and stopped when he went behind the bar. He came back around with a few bottles of water. “You’re going to need this.”

Nodding, I walked beside him to the door and groaned when he yanked it open, and the sun blasted through. It was a gorgeous fall day, and I would’ve been happy to see a blue sky any other time, but not this morning.

This morning, I wanted to crawl into my bed and bury my head under the covers for a multitude of reasons.

I spotted Rachel standing next to my SUV with a man in front of her. I recognized him, but I didn’t remember his name, not even as we got closer and he turned his attention to Tank and me.

“I’m glad you were already awake.” Rachel glanced up at the man across from her before meeting my gaze again. “I wasn’t even sure what time it was when my mom called.”

“Wanna explain why two women in their thirties are rushing home because their mom called?” Tank looked back and forth between us.

“Asked the same question, brother.”

“I already said you wouldn’t understand, Ritz.”

That was his name. The vision of him talking to Tank while we were in the kitchen flooded my mind, but it wasn’t the only one. My face flushed when I remembered sitting on Tank’s lap and kissing him, but I’d wanted to do a whole lot more. I didn’t look at Tank, although I could feel his stare on the side of my face.

“Try me,” Ritz said, and I was happy for the distraction.

“We don’t have time right now,” Rachel replied sternly before facing me fully. “You ready?”

I nodded. “Yeah.” Turning, I faced Tank and smiled. “Thank you for everything.”

He studied me carefully before gesturing to my purse. “Give me your phone.”

“My phone?” I questioned, but I still dug it out of my purse. “Why?”

“Unlock it.”

I did that too and then handed it to him. “Why do you want my phone?”

Within a few seconds, he handed it back to me. “Just texted my phone so I have your number.”

“Why do you need my number?”

“You find what you were looking for yet?”

I hadn’t, and he knew that, but I wanted to seem like I had because I honestly had no idea how I felt about last night. I’d had a really good time; however, I didn’t fit in here either. I was starting to think I didn’t fit anywhere.

“Not exactly, but I think I know what I need to do now.”

“Yeah?” He took a step closer. “What’s that?”

When I was silent, he shook his head. “Went to bed with Jane, woke up with the version of yourself your mom wants you to be.”

“That’s not true,” I replied quietly, but that was also a lie.

He put his hands on his hips. “You asked for my help, and I agreed.”

“I did, but…”

“No buts. Shit like this doesn’t fly in my world.”

“I don’t understand what that means,” I admitted when my head began to pound. I had no idea what he was trying to tell me.
