Rachel faced me and leaned her hip against the counter. “If he texts you, do you plan to respond?”

“It would be rude not to, don’t you think?”

She rolled her lips together. “If you’re answering because you want to hang out as friends, I think that’s great. But if it’s more for you, then you may want to cut ties now.”

Maddie turned back around and put the cups down on the counter. “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but I’m assuming you’re talking about a man.”

When I saw the smile on her face, I laughed. “That obvious, huh?”

“Wasn’t that hard to figure out by what you were saying and the fact that you’re in wrinkled clothes. Have a feeling you had a good time last night and slept in those.”

Rachel looked down at her clothes and laughed. “Oh my god, we’re a mess.”

Maddie put her hands in the air, palms facing us. “No judgment here, ladies.” We laughed along with her, and she continued. “Did you have a good time?”

“Yeah,” I admitted. “Maybe too good.”

“No such thing,” Maddie declared.

“There is if you know you can’t make it a regular thing,” Rachel replied with disappointment evident in her tone.

“Why not?”

“Because it was with some people our families wouldn’t approve of.”

“Oh.” Maddie nodded. “I know a little about that.”

“You were involved with someone your family didn’t like?” I asked, surprised by that. When she nodded, I continued. “What did you do?”

She glanced back and forth between us and smirked. “I moved in with him.”

“Seriously?” Rachel’s eyes widened. “What happened?”

“They came around. Now they love him. It just took a little time and a lot of patience.”

Rachel snorted. “It would take more than that for our families to like these guys.”

Maddie’s eyebrows rose. “Mind me asking why?”

I shared a look with Rachel before fessing up. “Because they’re in a motorcycle club.”

Her eyes widened. “You mean the Sinners?”

“Yeah.” I nodded, surprised. “Do you know them?”

She laughed. “I more than know them. My boyfriend’s half brother is a member.”

“Oh my god, you’re kidding,” Rachel said.

“Listen.” Maddie’s expression grew serious. “I know they seem hard and wild, but they are honestly the best guys. Now, if you would’ve said you were at the Widows motorcycle club, I would’ve told you to never go back. Those guys are bad news.”

I snapped my fingers and glanced at Rachel. “That’s why the girl at the hotel asked if we were looking for the good club or bad one when we stopped for directions.”

“Oh, that’s right,” Rachel agreed.

“I feel like there’s a lot to this story.” Maddie interjected.

Sighing, I nodded once. “There is.” I was ready to say more, but then the bell on the door rang, indicating someone had come in behind us.
