I dropped my head and sighed. “I’m not even sure why I care so fucking much about seein’ her.”

Bear reached out and squeezed my shoulder. “Known you a long time, brother.” I lifted my eyes and once again met his. “You always preferred the single life, but maybe that shit’s changing. That’s not a bad thing.”

He dropped his hand and took a step back when I answered. “No, it’s not, but I can’t see her ever really fitting in here.”

“I never thought Josie would either,” he reminded me. “But she’s proven me wrong over and over again.”

I huffed out a laugh. “That’s because she’s so much smarter than you.”

Bear laughed. “Can’t argue with that.” He gestured toward the open garage bay. “I’m gonna find her and ask her about the school-to-work program.”

Nodding, I pushed off the Jeep. “Just let me know.”

“Will do,” he called out as he left.

Glancing back at the table, I contemplated ignoring my phone altogether. I should just get started on the Jeep and talk to her after I finish. Lowering my head, I stared at the stained concrete under my feet and thought about Bear’s words. Before I invited her here again, I needed to decide what this was for me. He was right. She was a relationship girl no matter what shit she was trying to prove to herself or anyone else. Maybe the best thing to do was take a week or two to clear my head before I decided if I wanted to see her again.

Walking back to the table, I grabbed my phone and pulled up her text message.

Jane: I want to see you this weekend.

It was only going to take those seven little words to change my plan to take a break from each other, but I needed to dig a little more before I made that decision.

Tank: And do what?

It only took a minute for the bubbles to appear, and I found myself impatient, then relieved when her message eventually popped up.

Jane: I thought maybe you could help me figure out what I want to do.

Tank: You mean for a job?

Jane: Yeah. I’m having a hard time figuring out what I like.

That sounded easy enough. It also wouldn’t involve alcohol or music, so we wouldn’t be as likely to end up where we did last time. It might just give us both the answers we were looking for.

Tank: I can be done working around six on Saturday.

Jane: Okay. Do you want to meet somewhere and get something to eat while we talk?

I considered that and again knew that might be better than being at the clubhouse. There were way too many ways I could find trouble if we were here alone together.

Tank: That works. You know where you wanna go?

The bubbles appeared and disappeared several times before a text finally popped up.

Jane: I was thinking somewhere in New Hope.

I knew why she wanted to meet in New Hope and as much as it pissed me off that she felt she had to hide from her family, it was probably for the best.

Tank: I’ll text you a time and place to meet later this week.

Throwing my phone down on the table, I made my way back to the Jeep, satisfied I made the right decision.

Although I couldn’t help but wonder what she wrote in the text she deleted before she finally gave me her very polite response.
