Ritz looked confused. “Did he make any attempt to slow down?”

“I don’t know. He was on me as soon as I hit the center of the intersection.”

“And he only tagged your back bumper?”

“What are you gettin’ at?” Bear asked what I was wondering.

Ritz shrugged. “I don’t know. Just feels like if he wanted to do more damage, he could’ve. After he tagged you, you didn’t have control of the truck. He could’ve turned around and slammed you again, but he just drove off.”

“That’s true,” Bear agreed and looked at me. “How did he drive when he was leaving?”

I shook my head when I pictured the truck. “Like a regular driver.”

“He either wasn’t afraid of you chasing him down, or he didn’t care,” Gunner said. “You think it was a trap and he wanted you to follow him?”

“I thought of that.” I acknowledged.

“Guess it doesn’t matter. Someone either has a problem with the club or you specifically. We just need to figure out who.”

“Could be anyone,” Bull muttered my exact thoughts. “But we need to find him. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting pretty fucking tired of being blindsided.”

“I agree,” Bear said.

“Think he could be a Widows prospect?” I asked.

Bear rubbed his hand along his beard. “I’ll make a call. Hawk talks a good game. Says he wants to play nice and has no problem with us. If he’s serious, he’ll find out if any Widows are targeting us.”

“Might not be the Widows, brother.” Ritz pointed out.

“Gotta rule out the most obvious first,” Bear replied.

“You think this has anything to do with the girl you’ve been fucking around with?”

I jerked my head to the side and met Bull’s stare. “Why would it?”

“She isn’t one of us.” Bull watched me closely while he spoke, and I knew he was looking for my reaction, but I had no plans on giving him much.

“Doubt anyone from her life cares much about us.”

Bull snorted. “She’s loaded. Comes from a family with a lot of ties. It would be a stain on their reputation if anyone found out she was hanging around a motorcycle club.”

I gritted my teeth. “You got a problem with her, brother?”

“No problem,” Bull stated. “Just think you might be bringing shit here that we don’t need.”

“Her family know she’s been here?” Bear inquired.

I dropped my cigarette and crushed it under my boot. “Only her cousin.”

Ritz snorted. “Rachel ain’t tellin’ anyone she was here.”

“Why do you say that?” Gunner asked.

“Trust me, this isn’t a place Rachel wants people to know she enjoys coming to. She’s holdin’ on tight to her reputation for herself and her family.”

“Got the impression she’d have a much easier time tellin’ her family to fuck off than Jane would,” Gunner said.

He wasn’t wrong. I didn’t feel Jane would ever step outside her family’s shadow and be seen or heard. I wanted to be wrong. I wanted to convince her she could be so much more, but they’d had her ear for thirty years, and the shit they filled her head with would wear anyone down. It would take a lot of strength for her to find her voice and backbone. I just wasn’t sure she was ready to do that.
