“Oh my god, this is too much,” Rachel exclaimed. “I have one brother who I barely tolerate and a family I avoid.”

Everyone laughed, but Grace gestured toward me. “What about you, Jane? Do you have any siblings?”

“I have a sister, but we aren’t close.”

Bree’s eyebrows drew together, and I saw her look around the table before focusing on me. “Do you mind if we ask why? I mean, my sisters drive me crazy, but they’re still my best friends.”

I shrugged. “We’re just very different. Plus, my family isn’t how you describe yours.”

“What do you mean?”

“We’re just not that close,” I explained. “Most of the time I spend with my family is out of obligation and not because I want to.”

“Her sister also married her boyfriend,” Rachel added.

I actually watched Grace’s and Charlie’s mouths drop open, and it was hard not to laugh at their reaction.

Grace shook her head. “Please tell me you’re kidding.”

“No. Unfortunately, I’m not kidding.”

“Oh my god, that’s awful,” Charlie said quietly.

“I’m fine with it.”

Bree reached out and laid her hand on my arm. “Do you just say that because of how awful it is, or are you actually fine with it?”

No one had ever asked me that when I said I was fine with it. They just accepted my answer and moved on—except Tank. He was the only other person who asked, but I never really answered him. I guess I didn’t know how to react to someone who wanted to know how I felt.

“I’m fine with it now. Their wedding was almost eight months ago.”

“It hasn’t even been a year?” Charlie exhaled loudly. “I feel like if I had a sister and she did that to me, I’d have a very hard time forgiving her.”

Leaning forward, I laid my forearms on the table. “Sometimes, I think, maybe she did me a favor. I thought I loved him, but I don’t miss him, so maybe I never loved him the way I should have anyway.”

Bree squeezed my arm. “I think you might be right.”

Suddenly, Harper put two pitchers of margaritas on the table and slid into her seat, holding up her phone. “Got his number.”

“Who’s bartending tonight?” Charlie pushed out of her seat to look over Bree’s head. “That’s not Logan.”

“No, it’s a new guy. His name’s Brock.”

“He’s hot,” Charlie noted.

“Down girl,” Grace teased. “Don’t forget you’re married.”

Charlie laughed and sat back down. “I’m married, not dead.”

Grace snorted. “No, but Brock will be if Ben finds out you think he’s hot.”

I laughed along with everyone else and relaxed back into my seat. This was the first time I didn’t feel out of place in a group of people, but women in particular. There was no competition here. No one comparing their houses, ring sizes, or husband’s incomes. Nobody trying to one-up each other on where they went for their last vacation. It was just a bunch of girls sitting around talking about their families and pointing out hot guys. Glancing at the bartender, I could admit he was extremely good looking, but he was nothing compared to Tank.

Harper slid two glasses in front of Rachel and me, then filled them and pointed at them. “Drink up, ladies.”

With a smile, I lifted my glass and took a sip, but then immediately took a longer drink. “Wow, this is good.”

Harper winked. “Now you see why I got his number.”
