His expression hardened. “You’re what?”

Swallowing hard, I said it again, still not believing I said it aloud. “I’m getting married.” I hesitated but then continued. “Well, I mean he hasn’t officially asked me, but we went on a second date, and he brought it up again. I think I’m going to tell him it’s a good idea.”

“This the douche your mother set you up with?”

“He’s not a douche,” I argued, but he cut me off.

“What the fuck happened when you went out with the girls?” His eyebrows shot up. “They tell you to do this shit?”

“No, well, not exactly.”

“What exactly did they say?”

“They told me I should do what’s best for me.”

“And from that, you decided what’s best for you is marrying someone you barely fucking know to satisfy your mother?”

“No. That’s not why I’m doing it.”

He ran his hand over my hip. “Then why are you?”

When he stepped closer, my belly fluttered, and my resolve began to slip. All the bravado I had while driving here was getting further from my reach, and I was once again getting lost in what I felt when I knew that wasn’t what I needed. “Stop doing this. You can’t change my mind. I thought about this for an entire week. That’s why I didn’t text you back. I spent that time alone and weighed all the pros and cons. It was a hard decision, but it’s the one I made, and I’m sticking to it, Tank.”

He looked over my shoulder before inhaling and then exhaling slowly. “Okay, but do me a favor first.”

“What?”

“Spend the weekend with me.” My eyes widened, but he continued. “If you still want to marry him at the end of the weekend, I won’t say a fucking word.”

“I don’t think…”

“Don’t think about it.” He took another step closer, putting us close enough that our chests almost touched. “Remember when I found you on the side of the road?”

I swallowed hard. “Yeah.”

He skimmed his other hand along my side until his thumb lay just beneath my breast. “You didn’t think that day, did you? You followed your instincts. You got out of a bad situation and didn’t look back. Not one fucking time.”

My breath caught when his thumb moved very slowly back and forth. “This is different.”

“Why?”

“Because this is dangerous,” I admitted. “You’re dangerous.”

His eyes narrowed slightly like that wasn’t the answer he expected. Honestly, that wasn’t the answer I planned to give until I opened my mouth. “You afraid of me?”

I lifted my hands and laid them against his chest. “No.”

His expression relaxed, and he squeezed my hips, dropping his head until his lips hovered above mine. “Give me this weekend.” His lips tipped in a lazy grin. “You owe me.”

And with that one grin, all my resolve crumbled. It wouldn’t have if I didn’t want to stay. I wanted to hide here with him and pretend I didn’t have a life and responsibilities waiting for me.

I wanted that more than I’d wanted anything in my entire life.

Maybe, I only needed one last weekend.

“I don’t have anything with me,” I said quietly.

“You don’t need anything.”
