Page 53 of Wasted Time

Dom walked toward us, stopping by the garbage can to throw away his paper plate before standing next to Tank. “Already know what I want.”

Tank wrapped his hand around his shoulders. “Club feels the same, kid.”

Grinning, he shoved past us and started down the hallway toward the door leading outside. We watched until the door closed, and Tank jerked his head toward the stairs leading to the bedrooms. “I only need five minutes.”

“Should I wait here?”

He studied me for a moment before tugging on my hand and beginning to walk. “You can wait in my room.”

I followed him upstairs without saying a word. I hadn’t been back in his bedroom since the night I spent here, and I barely remembered that until he pushed open the door, and memories rushed through my mind. A flush worked its way over my skin when Tank dropped my hand and grabbed some clothes from the dresser across the room.

He glanced over his shoulder. “You can sit down, Jane.”

“Right.” I pushed my hair behind my ear and sat down in the chair near the door. The same chair where I’d found my jeans the morning I woke up.

“You good?”

“Yes,” I answered quickly, too quickly, and Tank narrowed his eyes. “I’ll just wait here.”

“Okay,” he replied, almost hesitantly. “I’ll be quick.”

I listened to the water turn on and tried to think of anything besides Tank being naked in the shower. There was something about him that I was drawn to, and that was exactly why I needed to cut ties with him. I’d made out with him once while drunk, so my memory was fuzzy, but my body seemed to remember.

In an attempt to distract myself, I pulled my phone from my small shoulder purse and began scrolling through social media. I was giggling at a meme about cats when my phone rang, and Mom flashed across the screen.

If I didn’t answer, she’d keep calling, but if I did, I’d have to lie as soon as she asked where I was. Neither option was one I wanted, but I didn’t really have a choice.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Jane, I know you’re volunteering, but I need to ask you a question.”

Relief overwhelmed me when she didn’t even ask but assumed where I was. “What do you need?”

“Have you spoken with Richard?”

“Not since our date. He had plans to be out of town.”

“Well, I spoke with Lisa, and she said Richard has been very impressed with you. She indicated that he is considering asking you to marry him, and your father and I think that’s a very good idea.”

Considering it? Either Richard wasn’t being honest with his sister, or Lisa wasn’t honest with my mom. Richard was clear about his intentions on our first date. He wanted a mother for his children when he had them. That was it in a nutshell. He didn’t want a wife. He had that, and she left him, so now he wanted something much simpler.

“Jane? Did you hear me?”

“Yes, Mom, I heard you.”

“So you understand this is the best option?”

I snorted. “Don’t you mean my only option?”

“Jane, don’t make that awful sound again, especially around Richard.” Before I could agree, which she fully expected, she continued. “When do you have plans to see Richard again?”

“He’s supposed to be back next week,” I replied, but my head snapped up when the bathroom door opened, and Tank stepped out.

Wearing nothing but a pair of jeans.

Good lord, he was sexy normally, but without a shirt on, he was unbelievable. I could understand his nickname when I saw him like this, although I knew it had nothing to do with his build. He was broad, with muscles bulging in his arms, but I had a feeling those muscles weren’t earned in any gym. His tattoos were like colorful maps from his shoulders to his wrists, but those were the only ones he had or the only ones I could see. I heard my mom’s voice, but my eyes were locked on his.

He walked to where I sat and squatted in front of me, putting his hands on the arms of the chair. “This is my time.”
