“Fair enough,” I replied.

A big part of me had wanted to put her on the back of my bike to go to her house, but I had no idea how much shit she planned to bring for the weekend. I also had no idea how she’d do on a bike for two hours.

We hopped in, and I started the engine, pulling onto the road and heading toward town.

She was quiet for a moment but then spoke up. “Dominic seemed surprised you wouldn’t be working this weekend.”

“Probably was.”

“Why? Do you work all the time?”

I considered that. “I work a lot. We’re down some men right now because of the racetrack we’re putting in, so a lot falls back on me.”

I felt her gaze on the side of my face. “Will you get in trouble for skipping this weekend?”

“No,” I answered.

“Why not?” she inquired. “I thought the garage belonged to the club.”

“It does,” I confirmed, surprised by how much she’d been paying attention.

“So wouldn’t you getting behind upset everyone?”

“That’s not how it works.”

“How does it work?”

I inhaled deeply before releasing it slowly, trying to decide how best to explain a motorcycle club to someone who knows nothing about them. “We all have jobs in the club. As long as those jobs get done, no one dictates how or when. We help each other out, pick up the load when someone needs time off, shit like that. That’s not how all clubs work, but that’s how Bear set us up.”

“So Bear established the club?” she asked.

“No, but that’s a long story, sweetheart.”

I glanced over and saw her shrug. “We have a long ride.”

Chuckling, I stared back at the road and settled into my seat. “Bear’s dad started this club. He wanted to create a club that ran a clean business but couldn’t do that in his old club, so he branched out and started fresh.”

“What’s a clean business?”

God, she was innocent. I had no idea how Jane had made it this far in life without anything bad happening to her, but I was damn happy she did. “Just means it’s legit.”

“The old clubs didn’t have legit businesses?”

“No and a lot still don’t, including the Widows. You’ll hear us mention them a lot.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s bad blood between us. Their national president, Viper, was killed this past year, so a new guy was voted in. He seems better. Bear and Gunner trust him, so if their guts are right, things may start to even out between us again.”

“Why don’t you trust him?”

Smirking, I kept my eyes on the road, but I was impressed she picked up on that. “Never said I don’t.”

“But you didn’t say you agreed with Bear and Gunner.”

“Not sure I do,” I admitted. “He needs to earn my trust.”

“He hasn’t yet?”
