Bear stared at me and grunted. “Yeah, he had a good night.”

Josie chuckled and shook her head. “You’re ridiculous.”

“What’s going on with you two?”

I made my way across the room and started a new pot of coffee before turning to lean my ass against the counter and meet Bear’s stare. “What do you mean?”

“You got a girl stayin’ the weekend, brother. You’ve never done that before. Just wondering what’s in your head.”

There weren’t many people I respected enough to share my personal information with, but Bear was one. He wasn’t only my friend, he was my brother in every sense of the word, and I felt like if I was going to talk to anyone about Jane, it was him.

Josie gestured toward the door. “Why don’t I just give you some time to talk?”

“Nah.” I shook my head. “You can stay. Don’t have anything to talk about.”

Bear narrowed his eyes. “So this is a one-weekend thing?”

I grabbed a cup and filled it before facing him again. “You know me, brother, and you know I’m not a relationship guy.”

“Thought it might be different this time.”

“We’re just havin’ a good time.” I lifted the cup to my lips.

Bear studied me. “She know that?”

I pulled the cup from my lips. “Not gonna mislead her if that’s what you mean.”

Bear jerked up his chin, obviously understanding I was done talking about it. “What are you guys up to today?”

“Got no plans.”

“It’s nice out. Might be one of the last good days.”

I snorted. “Are you telling us to go outside to play, Dad?”

“Fucker.” He laughed loudly. “I was just sayin’ if you were thinking about a ride, it might be a good day.” He gestured back and forth between him and Josie. “We’re goin’.”

“Thought you’d be working at the track today.”

“Planned on it, but woke up to this weather and decided we all deserved a break. Haven’t had one since we broke ground, and I have no idea when we’ll get one once the track’s up and running.”

“Makes sense. Where’re you headed?”

“To the beach.” Josie smiled. “Can you believe I’ve never been there? Well, not in North Carolina anyway.”

“That’s about a three-hour ride.”

“It really is the perfect day for it.” Josie smiled over her shoulder. “You’re welcome to come with us.”

I lifted the cup to my lips. “I’m not sure how Jane will feel about that.”

“Feel about what?”

My head snapped toward the doorway, and I saw Jane standing there with her hair in a ponytail, wearing yoga pants and one of my T-shirts. I couldn’t take my eyes off her when she started toward me and pointed at the coffee pot. “Is that coffee I smell?”

I cleared my throat. “Yeah.”

Grabbing a cup, I poured some into the cup just as Josie spoke. “If you like creamer, Jane, it’s in the refrigerator.”
