“He’s a part of a club that brings in more money than they talk about. It takes a lot of money to build the racetrack and put in the extra shit they are.”

I blinked slowly as dizziness began to overwhelm me. “What happened to me?”

“You were in a car accident,” he replied. “You probably have a concussion.” He pointed at my head. “You also have a nasty gash on your head.” He stood and dug in his pocket before squatting back down. He held out a pill. “Open your mouth.”

“What is that?” I asked.

“It’ll help with the pain,” he promised, and when a sharp sting tore through my temple, I opened my mouth. He dropped the pill inside and lifted an open bottle of water to my lips. “Drink.”

“Why do you care about my pain?” I asked after I swallowed.

“Need you alive,” he replied without any emotion. “At least until I find out if you’re gonna get me what I need.”

My eyes grew heavy, and he said something else, but it was too late. I was already drifting back into the darkness.

And for a moment, before the darkness surrounded me, I wondered if I would wake again.

Jumping off my bike,I made my way to her front door and knocked, but I already knew she wasn’t there. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I found Ritz’s name and hit call.

“Yeah?” he answered immediately.

“You hear anything?”

“Nothing.” Ritz sighed. “Rachel’s losing her shit, man. I don’t know what to tell her, but she’s a hundred percent confident that something has happened because she said Jane would never just disappear.”

“She’s right.” I stared into the darkness. “It’s one in the morning, brother. Even if she took some time to be alone, she’d be home by now.”

“Rachel called Richard.”

“Who the fuck is Richard?”

“She didn’t tell you about him?”

“If you’re talking about the douche she barely knows who asked her to marry him, then yeah, I know about him, but I didn’t know his name.”

Ritz chuckled. “Yeah, well, he’s out of town and has been for over a week.”

“Did she tell him what’s going on?”

“No and she made up some story about wanting to plan a party for her and had questions for him, but she wanted to check his schedule and make sure she wasn’t with him while they talked.”

I ran my hand through my hair. “This doesn’t feel right. We’re missing something.”

“Think this has anything to do with the kid who targeted you?”

“Can’t say for sure, but it’s a hell of a coincidence if it doesn’t. This kid appears out of the blue, hits me, Gunner watched him drive by the clubhouse a bunch of times Friday night, and now Jane’s missing.”

“It makes sense if he’s after you that he’d nab her.”

“Why?”

“Come on, brother. Anyone paying attention can see how you feel about her.”

I grunted. “I don’t even know how I feel about her.”
