“Drove all night with Rachel, retracing Jane’s steps.”

“You find anything?” Race asked.

“Nothing.” I sat back and crossed my arms over my chest. “But it was dark.”

Bull grunted. “Bear find something? That why he called this meeting?”

All heads turned to face Gunner, but he shook his head. “Don’t know much, brothers. He called me early this morning and asked me to pull this together as soon as I could. I do know he talked to Kyle last night.”

I heard boots before the door pushed open, and Bear stepped inside the room, but we all immediately stood when a man, who wasn’t exactly welcome in our club, walked in behind him.

“Relax,” Bear instructed. “I invited him. He has information we need.” He pointed at a seat near the door, right next to Bull. “Have a seat, Hawk.”

Hawk scanned the table, and when his eyes landed on Skinner, he grinned. Being members of rival clubs hadn’t damaged their friendship. “You owe me a beer.”

Skinner returned his grin while we all sat back down. “Let’s see what you have first.”

Hawk chuckled. “Gotta admit, now that I moved here, I see why you wanted to live in North Carolina. It sure as hell beats the weather in Colorado.”

“You makin’ any progress with the local club?”

I was surprised they were talking openly about the Widows. Rival clubs don’t share information, not typically, but nothing that happened recently has been typical. After Hawk became the national president of the Widows organization, he discovered all the shit the local club was involved in and made it his mission to clean house. He promised Bear there would be no more targeting of the Sinners, and so far, he’d kept that promise. He wanted the Widows to become a club very similar to the Sinners, clean and running legitimate businesses. He was likely going to have a much bigger hill to climb to make that happen or he would have to form his own club and start over.

I had my doubts he’d ever fully clean up the Widows. They were too big and had too many members who liked how the last president ran things.

“It’s slow, but I’m learning who can be useful and who can’t.”

Bear jerked up his chin. “Know from personal experience that job ain’t easy.”

“Never thought I’d see the day when we invited the Widows president to sit at our table and fucking chitchat.” Bull, never one to be silent with his opinion, sent an accusatory glare in Bear’s direction.

Bear returned his glare, and I sat up taller. Bear and Bull didn’t often see eye to eye. Bull had been a member when shit ran differently, and he was the only one who still held on to some of the club’s old ways. It caused tension this past year, and Bear inviting a Widow into our world had been a point of contention for a while. Eventually, this would blow up. I just hoped it wasn’t today because no matter how much it appeared Hawk was in our corner, he was still a Widow, and we couldn’t let him see we had any weaknesses that he could use against us if he chose to.

Getting inpatient, I spoke up. “I just spent the night driving all over this side of North Carolina and found nothin’. We need all the help we can get.”

Bear nodded. “Exactly. We’ll take whatever information we can from whoever’s willing to give it if it means I can keep our members safe.”

“She ain’t a member.” Bull looked at me. “Unless you’re making her one.”

Bear answered before I could. “Not talking about Jane.”

Both Bull and I turned our attention back toward Bear, but I was the only one to speak. “Then why the hell am I here?”

“This meeting’s about all of us.”

“All of us?”

Bear leaned his elbows on the table. “We’re being targeted, but not for the reasons we thought.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

Bear gestured toward Hawk. “Go ahead.”

Hawk looked around the table, and I had to give him credit. It would be hard to walk into a room of men from a rival club who weren’t exactly being friendly, but he made eye contact with every one of us before speaking.

“Heard some talk about someone who grabbed a girl and is ready to give her to the highest bidder.”

“Money?” I shook my head. “This shit is about money?”
