“Me too.” Ritz stood.

Bear sighed. “Alright, stay in touch. Don’t do anything if you find him. Just bring him here.” His eyes simmered with intensity when he continued. “Trust me, I know better than anyone what you’ll want to do if you find him, but don’t do it. He may be our only connection to the man with her, so we need him alive and talking.”

I nodded, fully understanding what Bear meant.

He’d be alive when I brought him in.

And I planned to make damn sure he was talking.

But that was all I could promise.

It had beentwenty-four hours of silence. I had a feeling he’d allotted Jane’s father an amount of time to get him his money, but I was still surprised he hadn’t reached out to Bear yet. Maybe the rumors Hawk heard were wrong. Perhaps this guy wasn’t someone from our past, but we couldn’t take any chances. I’d driven her path home so many fucking times and still found nothing, so I needed any information I could get, and about ten minutes ago, I hit the fucking jackpot.

My cell phone rang, and when I pulled it from my pocket, I recognized the number immediately. Bear made sure I had it just in case Hawk or his men found anything, and he needed to reach me fast. Accepting the call, I put it on speaker and laid it on the seat between me and Ritz. “Hawk.”

“One of my boys spotted a small gray truck, Indiana plate, parked in an alley about fifteen minutes west of New Hope. Small town called River Springs. Alley is off Third Street.”

I’d been to River Springs for parts one time, and there wasn’t anything there except a grocery store, a couple of dollar stores, and a parts store. The whole town was only about twenty miles long. It made New Hope look like a big-ass city.

“What the fuck was your guy doing in River Springs? There’s nothing there.”

“He was on the other side of that town visiting his folks. He took a shortcut through River Springs. Said he’d been there before and knew it would shave some time off his trip,” Hawk explained. “It was a lucky coincidence he saw the truck at a stop sign. Followed it. Saw him park in the alley and jog up a fire escape.”

“Apartment building?” Ritz asked.

“Said it’s a building with a pizza place on the first floor and apartments above.”

“Thanks.”

I grabbed the phone, ready to hang up when Hawk’s voice sounded again. “Stay safe.”

When he disconnected, I shoved the phone back into my pocket just as Ritz spoke. “Why the fuck do I trust that guy?”

“I don’t know.” I grunted, heading out of the city toward River Springs, happy I had my truck. “I didn’t, but lately, I’m starting to.”

“Pop does.”

I glanced at him quickly. “He tell you that?”

“Yep,” Ritz replied. “Said Hawk reminds him of his dad, Stone, back when Hawk’s dad was runnin’ the Widows. Pop said he trusted Stone with his life.”

“Says a lot,” I acknowledged. “But what the hell does he get out of helpin’ us?”

“A marker?” he suggested.

I considered that. It wouldn’t be unusual for a club member to help a rival member to have a favor owed to him, but it seemed as if he was going to a lot of trouble to earn that favor. “Maybe. But that doesn’t seem enough, does it?”

“Could be his loyalty to Skinner.”

I hadn’t thought of that, but it was a good point. “Yeah, we’ve seen that proven over and over again.”

“Doesn’t matter why,” Ritz stated. “All that matters is we’re one step closer to finding this prick.”

“It’s been too long.” I shook my head. “She’s been with him for almost three days. She’s not equipped for this shit.”
