The door pushed open, and Bear walked through. “Luke’s on his way to question us.”

“Who’s Luke?”

“He’s a friend of ours on the police force.”

“Cops?” Leo shot out of his seat. “Oh, hell no.”

Bull blocked his path when he headed toward the door. “You runnin’ from the cops?”

“No, but I’m gonna have to. I’m squatting in that shithole and driving what is probably a stolen truck, and when they question me, they’re gonna figure all that out.”

“You’re under our protection now.” Bear spoke up. “You don’t have to worry about that.”

He studied Bear. “Why would you protect me?”

Bear glanced at me, and I turned toward the kid. “Because you’re being straight with us. No matter if what you believe about me is right or wrong, we still owe you.” He gestured toward Leo. “Anything in that truck or apartment that identifies you?”

Leo contemplated for a moment before shaking his head. “No, all I got is in my bag”—he pointed at the corner of the room—“over there in the corner.”

Bear’s phone beeped, and he walked toward the door.

I pointed at the chair and held Leo’s stare. “Sit.”

He did, but he moved slowly. He wasn’t sure if he could trust us, which I completely understood. He proved that when he spoke. “You gonna tell this cop I hit your truck?”

I studied him. “No.”

His eyebrows rose slightly. “Why not?”

“Because I understand a little more why you did that.” I leaned my hip against Bear’s desk. “But don’t do that shit again. You get a pass this time, but you won’t next time. You got questions, you know you can come ask.”

He nodded slowly right as Bear walked back into his office, followed by Luke. Luke looked around the room, his attention pausing briefly on Leo before he faced me. “I need to ask you a few questions.” He glanced at Ritz and Leo. “All of you.”

“Whatever you need. We just want to find her.”

“Bear already told me what time the call came in and that you were concerned you might get one after you heard a rumor that her father got a call.”

“That’s right.”

“When’s the last time you saw Jane?”

“Sunday, around three. She left, said she was heading home, but her cousin Rachel got ahold of Ritz when she never heard from her.”

He looked at Ritz. “Is Rachel the one who knew about her father getting a call?”

“No,” Ritz replied. “She seemed surprised when I mentioned it to her.”

Luke frowned at Bear, telling us he’d already assumed we’d gotten that information illegally, but he didn’t question it further. Instead, he asked a few more questions, all ones we expected, but nothing we could give him was helpful. “We don’t have much to go on.”

He nodded and moved to stand in front of Leo. “Leo?”

“Yeah?”

“Need to ask you a few questions.”

“Okay,” he replied, but he looked nervous.

“What’s your last name?”
