“Not really.” She gently touched the bandage on her head with the exposed tips of her fingers. “Except a couple of times when he told me I was his payday. And he knew stuff.”

“Like what?” Luke watched her closely while she spoke.

“He knew about my family. Said it wouldn’t be hard for my dad to get five hundred thousand dollars,” she admitted. “Which I guess a lot of people could easily assume. He also knew I’d been at the clubhouse because he said he saw me with Tank.” She slid her eyes to me. “He saw us Friday night.”

My jaw hardened at the thought of him watching us, but when her cheeks flushed red, I understood she meant he saw us having sex.

“What does that mean?” Luke asked.

I pulled my attention from Jane and met Luke’s stare. “Means he was on the grounds if he was close enough to see us around the side of the building.”

“Your security cameras pick anything up?”

“No.” I shook my head. “But I’ll have the boys go back through them to be sure.”

“You have cameras?” Jane asked softly, but I could hear the concern in her voice.

“Not where we were,” I assured her. “I would never do that to you.”

She nodded but shifted her attention back to Luke when he spoke. “Did he know anything else?”

“Not that I can remember.” She swallowed and sank back against her pillows. “But I thought it odd that he didn’t know about my trust fund. He seemed to know so much, but he never mentioned it. I couldn’t think clearly most of the time. I’m not sure if that was because of my head injury or because of the medicine he was giving me, so I never thought to offer him money from that until the day I escaped. Before I could tell him I had my own money, he left.”

“What did he say before he left?”

“The same things, except he told me no one wanted me, so I figured he would probably kill me if I didn’t find a way out. I assumed that I no longer had a purpose if no one was giving him the money he wanted.”

She was so matter-of-fact about all of it, almost as if she was describing a movie she watched or something. I could tell by Luke’s expression that he thought the same.

“How did you get out?”

“The last time he brought me water, he got a phone call and seemed upset. He didn’t tie me as tight when he left because he seemed to be in a hurry. He made me drink some, and put the pill in my mouth, but he didn’t wait for me to swallow like he usually did. After he left, I spit it out. Once I heard his truck leave, I was able to get my hands untied, and I climbed out the window.”

“Can you describe him?”

“It was always dark. A blanket covered the only window, so I never saw much. I think he was wearing a mask because his voice was muffled.” She ran her fingertips along her forehead. “He was taller than me, but not really tall like you, and I think he had dark eyes.”

“If I bring in a sketch artist, could you describe him?”

“I can try, but all I really remember is what I just told you.”

Luke pulled his phone from his pocket. “Let’s give it a shot just in case you remember something while he’s doing the sketch. Give me a minute. I’m going to see if he can come right now.”

Luke excused himself, and I walked closer to the side of Jane’s bed. Rachel pointed at the door. “I’m going to see if your parents are here yet.” Rachel shifted her attention to me. “I’ll update the others too.”

“Thanks,” I muttered, but my eyes were on Jane.

She’d just closed the door when Jane looked up at me. “What others?”

“Guys from the club came as soon as they heard you’d been found. Your girls are out there too.”

“What girls?”

“Becs, Bree, Sydney, Maddie, Charlie, Grace, and Harper. Josie stayed back with Bear, but they’re on their way. Not sure who else came since I walked in here.” She blinked slowly. “They all need to see for themselves that you’re alright.” I sat in the chair beside her bed and leaned my forearms against the side. “I’m so fucking proud of you for getting away from him, Jane.” Reaching out, I laid my fingers along her arm. “We’re gonna find him.”

“Did he call you? He said he called you”—she met my eyes—“and was waiting for your answer.”

“We were just getting a game plan together,” I explained. “We were literally meeting with Luke when he got the call that you’d been found.”
