“He’s a cowardly worm,” Danny spat.

“You know he tried to kill his family.” Sean wasn’t asking. He was stating a fact. “After the fire, one of our chemists came to me and told me that Burt had asked him about medication that would be safe for sedating kids before a long trip. The chemist told him to fuck off but didn’t think Burt was going to try to burn his kids alive.”

“I’m assuming this chemist would not be willing to testify or give a statement in support of Janie?”

Sean scoffed. “Not a chance. And, I’m sorry, but I’ll have to decline your invitation to steal back my own drugs. It’s too big of a risk for us.”

“I understand.” Danny hadn’t expected to get much help, if any, from Sean. “Listen, the wife and kids—.”

Sean held up his hand. “Your boss handled that this morning.”

Danny nodded and rose from his chair. “Thanks for seeing me today.”

“Of course.”

As he neared the door, Danny pivoted back toward Sean and asked, “Where did your guys find Burt’s car?”

“A motel, I think.”

“Right.” Danny suspected he had just been at that motel, and as soon as he was out in his truck, he called Kostya.

“What did you do now?” The fixer gruffly answered.

“Nothing,” he replied defensively. “I wanted to ask you a question about security cameras.”

“So—ask.”

He frowned at Kostya’s surliness. “Do you think you could find evidence of the Triads planting drugs in the car that Janie Garner was driving?”

“If the evidence exists, my spiders will find it. I’ll need the location and date and approximate time. Make and model of the vehicle. License plate if you have it.”

“I’ll text it to you. Hey, Kostya, where would a man go to find sedatives to use on kids?”

“Is this a hypothetical?”

“Sean Leung told me that Burt asked one of his chemists for a sedative to use on kids.”

“Kids that he wanted to sleep through a house fire,” Kostya muttered with disgust. “Yeah, I know some places a man like Burt would go. I’ll check around and let you know what I find.”

“Thank you.”

Kostya grunted in that rude way of his and ended the call. Danny tossed his phone into the cup holder and left the warehouse. As much as he wanted to go see Macy, he had duties and responsibilities elsewhere.

His loyalties to the family came first, a fact that had never bothered him until Macy. His loyalties would always remain with Nikolai and the family, but his priorities were shifting. Macy occupied the top slot now, and he wasn’t sure how to handle the delicate balance between his heart and his promises.

Eventually, he would have to choose between the boss and Macy. A few days ago, he would have chosen the family without a second thought, but today?

Today, he would hesitate, and that hesitation was going to get someone hurt.

Chapter Eleven

Worried that I was missing out on important paperwork from A&M, I made the drive to the post office and waited in line. Normally, I could see all the time-sensitive pieces of information in my student account, but I had been having trouble accessing it the last week. Our mail had been forwarded to Sharon’s house, but not all of it was making its way to Splendora. It was one of those items on my to-do list that had been bumped time and again, but I finally had time to handle it today.

As I stood in line, I let my mind wander. There were so many things I still had to do before I left for College Station. I still needed to see if I could transfer to a Whataburger franchise there. As much as I wished it were otherwise, I had to work. I had considered getting a CNA license and working in the medical field, but the money wasn’t worth the terrible hours. I was better off slinging fries.

I had received enough scholarship money to make my own part of tuition and fees manageable through a small loan. I didn’t want to take out more than necessary, though. Working evenings and weekends was the reality that I would have to accept.

Van and I were both living on-campus but in different dorms. Her parents had insisted she move into the newest, nicest residence hall, one with private suites and resort level amenities. I had chosen a shared dorm in one of the older buildings that was on the cheapest tier of housing. Most of my time would be spent in class, studying, or working, and I wasn’t picky about where I slept.
