“Money for the Albanians and Triad. Question for the police.”

“About?”

“There was a fire.” Boychenko finally glanced at him. “It was bad.”

Danny went cold. “Macy? The kids?”

“No, they’re all okay!” Boychenko hurriedly assured him. “Apparently, she was the one who got everyone out of the house.”

“Was it a total loss?”

“Yeah.” Boychenko grimaced apologetically. “Your side was badly damaged, too. Artyom took care of everything for you. All of your stuff has been moved into your new place.”

“What new place?”

“The blue house on Lee Street.”

The blue house? The historic little bungalow Artyom had been renovated to flip. The one Danny had offered to buy but his uncle wouldn’t sell to him.

“But where is Macy? Where did they move?”

Boychenko was suddenly very focused as he merged onto Hardy Tollway.

“Roman.” Danny’s fingers curled into fists as his anxiety skyrocketed. “Where is Macy?”

“Look,” Boychenko said nervously, “I tried to help her, okay? I tracked her down way over in Splendora where she was staying with her mom and the kids.”

“Splendora? The grandmother?” Danny vaguely remembered Macy mentioning Janie’s mother once.

“Yeah. I offered her money, Danny. I offered to get her a lawyer. She told me to fuck off. Literally.” He gulped. “She said you’re a liar, and she wants nothing to do with you or anyone from our family.”

Ignoring that painful accusation, Danny zeroed in on the mention of a lawyer. “Why does she need a lawyer?”

“She doesn’t,” Boychenko clarified. “It’s her mom. Stepmom. Whatever.”

“Janie?”

“Yeah, she and the kids were all fucked up when the fire trucks and ambulances arrived at the fire. They accused her of drugging the kids and setting the fire herself. Some kind of twisted murder-suicide thing because of her job and Burt filing for divorce and some other shit.”

“Janie? Kill her kids? That’s insane!”

“I guess.” Boychenko shrugged. “I don’t know her well enough to say either way.”

“I know her, and she wouldn’t do that.” But that useless bastard she was married to would. “Burt filed for divorce?”

“That’s what the paper said.”

“But they’re safe in Splendora now?” Danny needed to know Macy was safe before he did anything else.

“The kids are,” Boychenko said, his hands tightening on the steering wheel.

“What does that mean?”

“Okay, before I tell you this, I have to warn you that I’ve been training nonstop with Ivan, and if you try to kill the messenger, I will knock your ass right out,” Boychenko cautioned.

Danny glared at him. “I wouldn’t hit you.”

“I’m just saying—.”
