I could see her debating if she wanted to move forward or not. Before talking to her, I’d have been thrilled if she changed her mind. Now, I was going to dig into her life, with or without her permission. Whatever this secret was, it wasn’t going to remain hidden for much longer.

MaKayla finally spoke. “You don’t know what this means to me. I just ask for your discretion. My mother is the sweetest, most loving person you’ll ever meet. I don’t want her to get hurt in all of this.”

“You must know that it is inevitable that she’ll find out. I mean secrets don’t remain secret forever. Are you sure you don’t want to include her in this?” I asked.

She shook her head. “I’ve been trying for years. She’s not going to tell you anything she hasn’t told me.”

“Then I guess I will start looking for who you are tomorrow. Do you think you can come to my office at ten?” I asked.

“I’m here on vacation with my mother,” she stated.

“Yet you are here now,” I reminded her.

“Because she’s sleeping,” she replied. “Is this something we can talk about on the phone?”

“No. I need to obtain your fingerprints and blood work. I will also need to gather more information from you.” I pulled out my cell phone and snapped her photo.

“I assume that is for research purposes as well,” she asked.

I nodded. “Why don’t you tell your mother that you met someone and have a date? Or does she keep you from dating as well?” I asked. I needed to know how closely her mother watched her.

MaKayla laughed. “I date. But what kind of date does one go on at ten in the morning?”

“One that meets for coffee,” I said.

“Or tea,” she smiled, holding up her cup. “I don’t think my mother will believe I am going out with a stranger when I haven’t been anywhere without her. She would question my judgment. Maybe I can tell her that you were my professor at college who now teaches in New York.”

“Professor? Interesting. I don’t think I've ever been called that before,” I replied.

“I can understand why. You don’t look like one.,” she said. I cocked a brow and she added, “You know what I mean. Old and gray.”

“Sounds like the professors I had,” I replied.

“Since I have my excuse to meet with you tomorrow and you agreed to take the job, I guess there’s nothing left to talk about tonight.”

“Everything else can wait till morning,” I said.

She nodded. “I better get back to the hotel. I slipped out and don’t want her to worry about me if she wakes.”

“Let me get you a taxi. One that will have no problem finding your hotel,” I offered.

“Thank you. My feet wouldn’t forgive me if I were to walk a few more blocks in these heels.”

She finished her tea and I saw her off in the taxi before heading back to my office. As soon as I sat at my desk, my phone rang. I knew right away it was going to be Draven. He didn’t want the job, but he sure in hell couldn’t help himself. He wanted the scoop on how the meeting went.

“How did it go? Did you let her down easy?” he asked.

He wasn’t going to expect this response. “I took the job,” I said.

“What? You’re joking right?” he replied.

“Do I ever joke about business?” I asked.

“I’m not sure you joke about anything. Damn. I would’ve lost that bet. What made you change your mind?” he asked.

“You were right. Something is off with this. I’m going to find out what that is,” I stated.

“So you don’t think she’s really looking for her family?” he questioned.
