She got up on her tippy toes and said, “My love.” Then she kissed me before releasing me. I raised a brow and she grinned. “That was in case my mother was still peeking through the curtains.”

I had so many more questions that I needed to still ask Venus. Also needed to update Brian and Draven with what I’ve learned. I needed them to start looking for this Michael guy. From what I saw, I couldn’t imagine they had a system that kept track of all tourists, at least not that far back. I wasn’t giving up hope that someone remembered him from twenty-five years ago. If not him, then maybe they would remember Venus. Someone must have missed her when she disappeared. I might not like how she’s been lying to MaKayla all these years, but Venus didn’t strike me as a vicious person. What she was doing was in her mind, all out of love. But to me, there had to be another way. MaKayla was searching and eventually, she’d find what she was looking for, with or without my help. At least with me here, I can control what she learns and when.

But all this was going to need to wait a little while longer. Right now, I had a beautiful woman in my arms with lips begging for me to kiss them again. I wasn’t about to disappoint her.

“Then let’s give her something to really see.” I reached out and pulled her against me and kissed her hard. She melted into my arms and met my lips with the same eagerness I was displaying.

My cock hardened and I knew I was playing with fire. This was no act. I wanted her more than I’d ever wanted anyone before. Staying in Halifax to be close to her was going to be easy. Leaving her was another story.

CHAPTER18

MaKayla

“Mom, what is he doing here?” I asked as I entered the kitchen and found Damien elbow deep in a sink full of suds.

“He offered to help. Who am I to turn down free help,” she chuckled.

“This is not funny. You can’t have him here. What will the customers think?” I asked.

“That you’re one lucky woman. I mean, he’s not bad looking.”

I rolled my eyes.No. He's gorgeous. “You know what I mean. He’s not an employee.”

“You’re right. He’s your boyfriend. And one that is willing to help because Tommy called in sick. Seems that he sprained his wrist playing hockey yesterday and won’t be able to come in for at least a week.”

“How come I’m just hearing about that now,” I asked.

“I would’ve told you, but Damien was here with me when I got the call earlier. Once he offered to step in, the rest slipped my mind,” she replied.

I should be grateful. So why am I not?

Jenny walked into the kitchen too and said, “What’s everyone doing in here?”

“Sorry. I was just coming back out to the dining room. Is everything okay?” I asked.

“Yup. Hey, did you see the new guy? I like him. He's a keeper,” she said. “I feel bad for Tommy and everything, but Damien is a dream to look at. And Ilovehis accent. Sexy.”

“Jenny, there are customers waiting,” I reminded her, ushering her out of the kitchen. She knew her job, but I didn’t want her standing there ogling Damien.I’m not jealous. I just don’t want him to feel uncomfortable.

With Jenny out of the kitchen, I made my way past the chef and over to Damien. I might not want him here, but it was rude not to acknowledge him. “Hi. You really don’t need to do this but thank you.”

“You’re welcome, mon amour,” he replied.

I heard the chef chuckle. This was embarrassing. I never would allow such blatant flirtation in the restaurant from my staff. And here it was happening with me. “Damien, we need to talk later.”

“Good. I was hoping for a reason to see you after work. I’ll drive you home,” he said.

“I have my own car here,” I reminded him.

“Okay. Then we can leave my car here and I can just go home with you,” he smiled, grabbing another large pot off the counter and washing it.

Leaning very close to him I asked, “What are you doing?”

He kissed my cheek and then said, “I’m doing the dishes.”

I shook my head and walked away. Had everyone lost their minds? This was no way to run a business. I had rules, and no one was following them. The worst part was all this was for nothing. Damien wasn’t my boyfriend. We weren’t dating. These sweet words of affection and delicious kisses were all just an act.

And that’s what was really troubling me the most. I hated the lying, and each time, I was only getting in deeper.
