“Why didn’t you correct her? I’mnotyour date,” MaKayla said softly.

“Because I don’t care what she thinks,” I replied honestly.

MaKayla looked around and then back to me. “That waitress seemed...disappointed. Guess she was expecting me to order something...stronger, but I don’t drink,” she said.

“I think she was disappointed you showed up,” I replied. MaKayla looked puzzled and I said, “Never mind.”

Her tea arrived and MaKayla said, “I’m not sure where to start.”

“How about telling me why you’re looking for your family,” I stated.

“Doesn’t everyone want to know their family?” she asked.

“Many adoptive children are curious, but not as desperate as you appear to be.”

“I’m not adopted. I was raised by my biological mother. I’m just looking for my father’s family,” she stated.

“And your mother doesn’t know how to find them?” I asked.

She looked down at her tea and didn’t look up when she replied. “I don’t know. She won’t tell me.”

And now I know why you need me.

“I take it your father and mother didn’t part ways on good terms.”

“She has told me very little about him,” she said, finally looking up at me.

“Why don’t you tell me what you do know,” I suggested.

“Mom said that he died when I was very young. I never met him. But he provided for us before he died. She told me that he never wanted me to know his family because they are not good people,” she stated.

“Yet here you are, searching for them.” It wasn’t a question, but I hoped for an answer.

MaKayla nodded. “I know it doesn’t make sense, but I need to know where I came from.”

“Isn’t it enough to know your family on your mother's side?” I questioned.

“I...I don’t know them either. She won’t talk about her past at all. It’s always been just the two of us. No one else. That’s why I need your help.”

She definitely had my interest piqued. “What have you tried in the past?”

“All those DNA types of tests, but they never come back with anyone who could be a match. It’s as though no one from either side of my family has ever taken a DNA test,” she said. “I just can’t understand that. I mean so many people I know have taken tests. They found long-lost cousins and someone I know even found siblings they knew nothing about. How is it that no one is a match to me?”

“Each case is unique. It is possible that your family does not believe in such testing.”I know I haven’t done mine.

“Guess that is possible. I mean why do it if you aren’t looking for anything,” she sighed. “I’ve brought copies of the test results with me in case you think they might help.” She reached for her purse.

“I’ll take them later, but I want to start from the beginning on my own,” I said.

She smiled. “Does this mean you’re taking the job? You’ll find my family?”

I hadn’t planned on it, but right now I was more concerned that her so-called mother might be hiding a lot more from MaKayla than just who her family is. Could MaKayla be a missing person? Was that the reason behind all the secrecy? It made the most sense.

“I'll take the job, whether I can find them or not will depend. Anyway, I’m going to need information regarding your mother too. Can you email her name and a photo of her?”

“Yes I can. But I am not looking for her,” she said.

“If you want my help, you also agree to do thismyway without questions,” I said.
