“I want to make music and record...”

“You can do all that. I’ll even build you your own studio at the house, so you can work on your music anytime you want.” I continue to move my hands in small circular patterns on her back, keeping her close.

“War, I’m not... I’m not very good with...”

I can see she is struggling with what she wants to tell me. “Kitten, you’re safe with me. Just say it.” I kiss her lips lightly.

“I haven’t been around a lot of guys.” I feel her try to twist away from me, but I hold her steady, keeping her with me.

“Baby, look at me.” I wait for her to make contact. “I know this is crazy. But we can take it slow.” I don’t want to lie to her, so I tell it to her straight. “I want you, Maddie. And I mean to have you in my bed, but I will never hurt you. We can move slowly. Now, that being said, if we go out there,” I gesture towards the opening of the tent, “we have to put on a show. I will need you to play along with any touching and kissing and whatever else I think is necessary to get them off our backs.”

Risk pops back in. “I don’t mean to push you, but things are heating up and the crowd is moving closer and closer to this tent. We got a plan yet?” He looks to me for an answer.

I look at Maddie. “Kitten?”

“I’m scared.” She looked it. She’s gripping my forearms, her face pale.

“You’ve gotta trust me. No one gets near you no matter what decision you make,” I assure her and pull her close so we’re touching.

“Okay, we’ll try to be a couple.” It’s only a whisper and only meant for me.

Fuck, yes! Thank Christ!

I keep my cool and turn to Risk. “Get Guard.”

I pull Maddie to my side and wrap my arm around her. Guard, Risk, and the band walk back in.

“Right, so Maddie has agreed to be mine.” I say clearly and decisively.

“What the fuck?!” Paul shouts. “No way. Not happening. Maddie come here.” He starts to walk over.

Maddie looks at Paul and calmly says, “Stop. Paul, I’m good.” She pauses before continuing. “Really, I am. War and I understand each other and this is the best way. I need you to be cool and calm down.”

“You don’t want him. I know you, Maddie, and you have no clue what’ll be expected of you.”

“Paul, I’m twenty-nine. I’ve been through enough to know what I do and don’t want. Thank you for being concerned, but I get to make my own decisions.” She was smooth, almost cold. “Should I remind you that I didn’t want to do this concert in the first place but you insisted? Now you want to tell me who to be with? I can decide that for myself, thanks.”

Guard looked stunned, and for that matter, so was I. Showing some serious backbone! This woman never ceases to amaze me.

Guard finally spoke, “Risk, you lead the way. The rest of the band will follow you. I suggest you take them straight to their van. The equipment has already been dismantled and put away. War will walk out with Maddie and Demon close by.” Guard’s tone changes as he stares right at me. “This has to be real. They gotta know she’s yours in every way. Do you understand?”

“Perfectly.”

“Maddie, do you get this?” Guard asks her firmly.

“Yes. But how do we make sure it looks real?” So innocent. Jesus, she is going to kill me.

“Follow War’s lead. Let him do the talking and do not let go of him.” Guard is adamant. He turns back to me. “Keep her close. Fuck, make sure they see you and then find a quiet place and stay for a while before taking her with you. Maybe go upstairs to your room for a while, then duck out the back to get her to her place. You go there together; you stay there together. I don’t want any unwelcome surprises should some asshole follow.”

“Yeah, right.” I answer. And he is right. We have to do this by the book. I turn to Maddie. “You ready, Kitten?”

She holds my hand tighter. “I think so.”
