“Doesn’t feel like it,” Taylor muttered.

A pang hit Kayleigh as she realized that Beau would be at the wedding as he was Dean’s best man, and it would be the first time Taylor saw him since he left after the attack. Although Taylor tried to hide her feelings, she shone a little less brightly than usual in the recent weeks and it had been painful to see.

“Is Beau definitely coming back for it?” she asked hesitantly. Although Taylor just declared them sisters, they never really talked about anything personal, and Kayleigh didn’t know if she was overstepping any boundaries.

“As far as I know. I bet he’ll look good in his tux, the sexy prick,” Taylor grumbled.

“I’m sure you’ll look just as stunning in your dress, and you’ll make him wish he’d never left,” Kayleigh replied.

“Thanks, girl,” Taylor said. When Ben rejoined them, she added, “Because you’re both working earlier tomorrow I want you to take the following evening off, that’s non-negotiable.”

Ben smiled and mock-saluted. “Yes, ma’am.”

Kayleigh managed to tear her eyes from his wicked smile long enough to nod her head in agreement. The rest of their shift passed by uneventfully and Kayleigh was a little surprised when Ben dropped her off at home and just said goodbye. He didn’t talk about anything other than general bar chitchat, there were no deep and meaningful conversations, no sharing of vulnerable secrets, no references to their previous day date or even their kiss. She was definitely in the friend zone. That bothered her so much more than she had thought it would. What gives?

After chatting with her parents briefly, Kayleigh went to her room and switched on her computer, the device whirring away comfortingly as she waited for her King to come online so she could ask him the question she’d been psyching herself up to ask.

GoodGirlKay:Would you maybe read my newest story? It feels like something is missing but I don’t know what?

GreenEyedKing96:Absolutely, can’t wait! What’s this one about?

GoodGirlKay:It’s a Romeo & Juliet retelling, but in gamer form with quests obviously.

GreenEyedKing96:You had me at Romeo…

GoodGirlKay:Haha, I hope it translates well, some people might think it’s weird?

GreenEyedKing96:Then those people are stupid. Question, do they end up together?

GoodGirlKay:I’m not sure yet, that’s the bit that’s missing.

GreenEyedKing96:So, no ending? What’s going to happen to my sense of closure?

GoodGirlKay:We’ll discuss it together and decide what the best ending is.

GreenEyedKing96:Surely you can’t kill them? How is that a happy ending? It’s not romantic at all and you know people love a romance!

GoodGirlKay:But if they stay alive there’s no sacrifice. And isn’t it romantic that they’ll be together in death?

GreenEyedKing96:Absolutely not.

GoodGirlKay:Okay, well this is why I have you, to help me with these problems.

GreenEyedKing96:That’s all I’m good for?

GoodGirlKay:There’s other things…

GreenEyedKing96:Such as?

GoodGirlKay:It’s a great boost when you laugh at my lame jokes…

GreenEyedKing96:They’re not lame, they’re my favorite part of the day. What else?

GoodGirlKay:Ummmm, you pump me up and make me feel happy.

Pause.

GreenEyedKing96:Do I make you feel anything else?
