Ben winced. “One night, I discovered my girlfriend had been seeing my brother behind my back. Not only that but she also told him some…sensitive information which he chose to share with the family during a private event and well, they humiliated me. That on top of everything just…I had to get away, I had to leave, Kay.” He met her eyes with a desperation that made her want to wrap him in her arms and never let go.

“I’m sorry they did that to you. Families should never betray each other like that, and your brother and your ex-girlfriend sound pretty sucky to me.”

He smiled gently at her words.

“Do you miss them?” she asked softly.

He pursed his lips, his expression confused, like he wasn’t sure or not.

“Either way, I’m sorry for what happened to you, no one deserves that. And although I would havewordsif I ever saw them, I’m glad you came here, and we got to meet.”

He smiled at her, full force, the pain briefly forgotten.

“So, what games do you play?”

His eyes lit up. “I didn’t mention it before, but I also play Queen’s Ransom.”

“You do? How did you get past the Lunatic Jester? I’ve been struggling with that for ages!”

“Ah, I don’t think I’m at that point yet, I’ve only just found the Potion of Light,” he replied.

“Ugh, that took me ages. I couldn’t work it out until I talked it through with a friend who figured out that you just have to bribe the-”

“Howling Monkeys with the enchanted bananas?”

“Yes!” she shook her head, amazed. “You knew that too? I could not figure it out for the life of me.”

He shrugged, a small smile playing around his lips and a look in his eye that she hadn’t seen before; they were bright like wildfire, burning her all over with their scorching intensity.

“So, it’s Thanksgiving in two weeks. I know we’ve only known each other for over a month but would you maybe wanna spend it with me and my parents?” she asked, worried he would refuse or that he would think she was taking things too fast, but instead he nodded.

“I would love nothing more.”

Ben drove her home, holding her hand the entire way before pressing a soft kiss to her lips, trailing along her jaw and finishing at the tender spot just behind her ear.

“See you tomorrow, bad girl.”

Lord, when he called her that she wanted to be bad, but only for him.

Chapter 12

“I’ll get it!” Kayleigh yelled when the doorbell rang. Excitement drove her steps towards the door, she was so eager to see him. She threw it open and there he was, looking festive in a burgundy and rust patterned sweatshirt, his blue jeans turned up at the ankles showing off his tan boots. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close and she went, fitting to him perfectly.

“You look beautiful,” he murmured in her ear, pressing a kiss to the shell, his breath warming it had goosebumps raising all over her skin.

“And who is this handsome young man?” Kayleigh pulled away when her mother appeared.

“Hi, I’m Ben, lovely to meet you, Mrs. Good. These are for you, ma’am,” he said, holding out some white roses that Kayleigh only just noticed and dang if her heart didn’t flutter at the gesture, or the way hema’am’ed her mom.

“Lovely to meet you, Ben. Please, call me Maureen.” Kayleigh watched her mom take the flowers, positive that she was blushing. “Albert, come meet Kayleigh’s young man!” Maureen called before heading back into the kitchen.

“I’m sorry, I haven’t told her we’re not official or anything. She didn’t mean you weremyyoung man,” Kayleigh whispered.

Ben turned towards her, his mouth quirked up on one side. “I’m not?”

“Do you want to be?” left her mouth before she could stop it.
