This time he was the one who kissed me hard.

When I finally pulled away, breathless, I said, “That didn’t disappoint me.”

“Now who’s making jokes?”

“Just come back to me,” I said. “I’m sure we can figure everything else out…”

A shadow passed over his face–as if Brennan’s ghost were a real entity and not just an idea we all ahd to reckon with–but he nodded. “Nothing could keep me away, Amelia.”

His hand cupped my jaw, and he turned my face up to his. He kissed me again, this time soft and tender. It felt like a promise.

Then–Shaw was Shaw–he gave me a wink and strode away. I watched him go, my lips feeling plump and swollen, my mind reeling.

I was worried for him, but when he had disappeared, Teresa fell in beside me. I glanced at her in alarm, worried about how long she’d been there.

But she just walked beside me in silence. Was she one of my bodyguards now?

I was startled all over again when she suddenly said, “He’ll be fine. He always is.”

“Were you friends with Brennan?”

“Yes.” The word was clipped. Teresa clearly didn’t want to talk any more. Instead, she added, “If I were you, I’d keep an eye on where my little brother was going.”

I collectedAiden on my way to pick up Dylan from school. He gave me a curious look when I asked him to walk with me, but he came along. As we walked the paths through the forest, birds sang and orange and gold leaves drifted from the tree.

He said, “It’s beautiful here. I can see why you like it.”

“It’s just a forest. Just like the one on the other side of neutral territory.” The Longroad forest had once been my refuge.

He glanced at me as if he thought I was lying, but said nothing. “What did you want to talk about?”

Apparently, I was easy to read. “You’re getting to know people in the pack?”

“I have to, don’t I?”

“Just… be careful. There are some unsavory elements.”

His lips curled. “Totally surprising to me. I thought every pack was composed of would-be Boy Scouts and nuns.”

“Aiden…”

“Who told you to talk to me? Was it Stone?” He looked concerned at the idea.

I shook my head. “Just a random friend.”

I stumbled over calling Teresa afriend, but I couldn’t think of another word at the moment. “Where are you going tonight?”

“One of the pack pubs. The Revelry. Have you been there?”

I shook my head.

“Always the good girl,” he teased, and I felt more pissed off than I should’ve. Maybe the King brothers had already used up all my patience.

I glared at him.

“Don’t worry. No one’s going to fuck with me. Not when I’m the brother of the alpha’s girl.”
