"I know," I said, nodding in agreement. "You know I’m loyal to Stone. But I don't want to be caught off guard if... if he starts hurting people he shouldn't."

Like Amelia.

I didn’t have to say it. I knew they heard it.

"And what are you going to do if he hurts someone?" Ben asked curiously, idly, as if it weren't a test.

“I could challenge him. I could take him.”

“You say that now, after a few beers. We all saw the way you hit the ground.”

I scoffed, but there was no denying that Stone packed some power.

“I don’t think the pack needs one alpha, anyway.” Will said. “I’m tired of being ruled by a despot.”

“So what would you do instead?”

“ We could elect the person who leads. We could agree on who would be alpha. For a season. Not for life…until someone challenges and kills them.”

“I have to admit, you’re making sense to me.”

“ Good.” Ben clapped me on the shoulder. “We'll have to talk more, Cole.”

We split apart, and as I walked along the paths, I wondered if I'd been convincing. Everyone knew how loyal I was to Stone. But I didn’t think I could hide how I felt about Amelia, either.

Hopefully, that was enough to convince the traitors to the pack.

As I was walking back, I saw Amelia standing out on her balcony. Her hair floated in the breeze and she looked ethereal. She had a truly wild beauty, that seemed like an arrow straight to my soul.

And she made me wild too.

CHAPTER42

Amelia

I’ve been sleepwalking again.

Brennan was there, meeting me down by the lake.

"Stay here with me," he murmured as he wrapped me in his arms. I didn't look up to see his face. Instead, I squeezed my eyes shut, knowing I didn't want to look; I just wanted to be wrapped in those strong arms, to breathe in his familiar scent.

"You don't want to go up to the cottage?"

"I want you right here."

With my head resting against his chest, I could feel his heart beating steadily. It was the only sound I wanted to hear, the only thing that could calm the storm inside me. I knew that I couldn't stay like this forever, but for now, it was enough.

"I missed you," I whispered, feeling the tears beginning to well up behind my closed lids.

"I missed you too," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper.

"I wish you were real."

He let out a low laugh that vibrated against my chest. His hands slid to my ass, cupped it and squeezed hard. I ground forward against him as his lips invaded my throat, nipping and nuzzling my tender skin; his jaw brushed over my t-shirt, and pleasure and pain mingled together as his chin dug into the new mark. "Is this real enough for you?"

I gasped as he pulled me closer, his lips moving from my neck to my lips, devouring me like a man starved of oxygen. I tangled my fingers in his hair, tugging at the soft strands as I kissed him back hungrily.

Even after these years,my body still craved his touch, his kiss. He was the one that could make me forget everything else, the one that could take me to a place where nothing else mattered.
