Stone softened visibly. Who knew the fearsome alpha could be brought to his knees by such tender little gestures?

As soon as I turned toward him, Stone said, “Absolutely not. You’re not coming with us.”

Well, my brother had made a quick recovery back to being a dickhead.

“You might need me.”

“You don’t want to be a weapon, remember?” Stone said dismissively. Then, he added, “I need you to protect Amelia. I know you would do anything for her. With your power… there’s no one I want looking after her more.”

I started at Stone, someone I could never understand anymore than he could understand me.

“I’m proud of you,” Stone said quietly, clapping me on the shoulder. “I love you, brother. And if I survive tonight, I might even start taking your advice.”

I scoffed. “I won’t hold my breath.”

Stone grinned at me, patted my shoulder again and moved past me, to begin arranging his forces.

“I love you too, you know.” I told his back.

“Yeah, I know.” He glanced at me over his shoulder. “I figure we say it enough other ways, but maybe sometimes, it just needs to be said out loud.”

Then he headed off into the crowd of soldiers, who closed around him, ready to hear the plans for the fight ahead.

I turned to Amelia, knowing I had my own mission. “Let’s get you home.”

“Let me say goodbye first,” she said.

“He’ll come home, Amelia,” I promised him. “And he’ll bring them back. He always does.”

“Is that a premonition you have?” She sounded hopeful. “A dream?”

I wanted to comfort her, but not enough to lie. I shook my head. “All right. Say goodbye. Then let’s move fast.”

She nodded, and went to hug Shaw and Cole, then Lawson and Aiden, goodbye. Each exchange was short, smiling, light-hearted.

But they all hugged each other hard, as if it might be their last time.

Her t-shirt rode up her pale thighs and she looked exhausted as she padded barefoot across the wet lawn to me. Bits of grass clung to her bare thighs, and mud splattered her feet. There were gray circles under her eyes as if she hadn’t slept well.

“Are you all right?” I asked as she climbed into the front seat, settling gingerly into it as if she were sore.

She nodded. My nostrils flared, smelling sex and pack on her, and I wondered which of my brothers it had been. I wouldn’t have left her sore—the thought of hurting Amelia killed me—but I knew we all satisfied different parts of Amelia. None of us would truly hurt her.

She was ours.

I pulled out onto the road heading back to King territory. Another car pulled out behind us, following us home. Stone would make sure we made it back safely, and I had no doubt he’d leave some of his soldiers stationed around the house tonight, making sure she and Dylan were safe. Stone wanted me there most of all, though, and I had mixed feelings about that.

I’d kill for Amelia again. I knew now that I didn’t regret it.

I parked in front of the house and went around to her side, opening the door. She took my hand when I offered it. This close, I realized there was something odd about her scent, something metallic and coppery and not quite right.

“Are you bleeding?” Sudden concern overtook me, and I swept her off her feet, carrying her into the house.

“Liam…” She struggled in my arms, then her gaze met my worried one and she relaxed, letting me carry her with her arms twined around my neck. “I’m fine. What is it?”

But I couldn’t stand the thought of her being hurt. I took her into my room and sank onto the bed with her on my lap. I checked her over for wounds, sliding my hands over her soft, smooth legs, up her silky sides. She bit her lower lip, her thighs tensing, and it took me a second—and the scent of her—to realize she was aroused by my touch. I slid my hands up under the t-shirt, stripping it off her to make sure her skin was unbroken.

She pulled her hair quickly over her shoulder. “What is it?”
