She was too smart for her own good. The apple cider bath. The license plates she must have had changed.

But she wasn’t the only one who had disappeared. I’d lost track of the rogue.

Could the rogue be Aiden or Lawson? One of the men she obviously cared so much about, coming to her aid? But I was hard pressed to imagine who could match me. Some random from the Longroad pack… I wasn’t sure they could put up much of a fight. But that other wolf had almost taken me down.

And had the rogue been trying to protect Amelia from me… or making sure she made it into their trap?

“You might as well stop hiding out here.”

The voice made me jump, which made me want to punch the bearer of the voice in the face, even before Shaw swaggered out of the shadows with his hands jammed into his pockets.

Shaw had a very punchable face.

“I’m not hiding.”

“I know I always pace around the front yard when I’m excited to face Karissa.” Shaw crossed his arms over his chest. “She’s ready to murder you. She feels very protective of Amelia. And the fact that Dylan is out there somewhere in danger…”

I grunted. There was nothing to say. I’d wanted in my own fucked up way to protect Amelia. I’d felt I could only do that if I had the complete truth. But clearly, I was not doing a good job of protecting Amelia.

Part of me wanted to ask Shaw how I could make this better once I found her. But I couldn’t bring myself to ask.

“Where is Cole?” Shaw asked. “Are we pretending that this doesn’t fuck with his head too?”

“Cole?” I frowned.

“Okay, so I see that we are. It’s an interesting way to play things, fresh on the heels of the Amelia disaster.”

It was bad enough that Shaw had been the one to get Amelia through her heat. I didn’t want to think about my best friend and Amelia.

And the fact that she was Brennan’s…

Her question came back to me with a vengeance. Her ferocity when she asked me, “What would Brennan think of the way you’re treating me?”

I’d wanted to get revenge for Brennan. To let him rest in peace. To make sure the Longroad pack paid for what they did.

So when I had been doing everything for Brennan… How had I fucked everything up so badly?

“Brace yourself,” Shaw muttered under his breath. I jerked around and looked at him, surprised by those words. I didn’t expect Shaw to be on my side at all after what I had done.

And I also didn’t expect to see Liam, looking more clean cut than I’d seen him since he was twelve years old, striding toward us. For a second he was a stranger; then I saw those stormy eyes. “What’s going on with him?”

“I don’t know.” Shaw said. “All I know is he’s different since Amelia came. I can’t figure out if it’s going to be better or worse.”

“Worse how?” I demanded, because I couldn’t tell how Liam could get any worse. He was already a mess.

Before Liam was in normal conversational range, he blurted, “You’ve got to find Nathan Longroad.”

Shaw glanced at me as if he wasn’t sure what to make of Liam. It wasn’t like I ever had those answers.

“I’ve been trying to find him. But right now, our top priority is Amelia and Dylan.” I’d thrown all our pack resources into finding them. It should just be a matter of time but still… the possibility I’d lost her clawed at my chest.

My wolf was wild inside me, desperate to run and find her.

“So now that you’ve lost her, you realize what she is to you?” Liam had the crazy eyes. I didn’t understand the depth of his attachment to Amelia. He’d shared about six words with her before he swept in and carried her away from Louisa’s rock as if he were her savior.

“She’s Dylan’s mother.” I began.

Liam let out a distinctly unhinged laugh. “She is that, yes, and that would be enough. But you know that’s not all she is to you.”
