But there were stories of shifters carrying part-vampire children to term. Unfortunately, both mother and child had been rejected by the shifter world.

We were far more open minded.

“What do you think about the little boy?” Caroline mused. “Do you think that if we turned him, he'd stay a little boy forever? He's so cute.”

Some dark emotion raced through my gut, tightened my muscles. “We're not going to do that.”

“Why not?” Caroline seemed genuinely curious. “I've never seen you care very much about anyone before.”

“Kids are different.”

“Maybe.” She tilted her head to one side until her head rested on my shoulder, and I stiffened as always. She was intent on the motel as if she could see right through the brick walls. “Or maybeshe'sdifferent. You aren't allowed to fall in love with her without ever talking to her.”

“I'm not in love,” I scoffed.

“You make it sound ridiculous,” she chided. “Vampires and wolves are as susceptible as humans to that particular disease.”

“What did you do to the sister?”

“Lucas slipped an enchantment her way. It looks very nasty, but humans freak out so easily about a little blood.”

“You freak out about a little blood too,” I reminded her.

She let out a throaty laugh, her hand squeezing my shoulder. I wanted to shake her off, but it would have hurt her feelings. “Don't tease. I'm already a bit peckish.”

“Will she recover given enough time? Or does she need a counter enchantment?” And if she did, would Amelia be able to figure it out?

I was impressed Amelia had left her sister and kept running. Watching her, she struck me as a sweet, sentimental type. Maybe she was craftier than she seemed at first glance.

“She'll need a counter enchantment to wake up. You can use it as a bartering tool.”

“The goal isn't to terrorize her,” I reminded her. “Although my face will probably do that alone.”

She rested her hand on my arm. “You don't give yourself enough credit, Wolf.”

I scoffed. “I think we'd be better served if I just give Amelia the counter enchantment. It will encourage her to trust me. But I need to figure out a way that doesn't make it seem as if I must have been involved.”

“So you're finally going to reveal yourself?” she sounded amused. “Instead of just stalking her?”

“I'm not stalking her.”

“You can kidnap her at anytime. She's alone now.”

“She's not alone. She has the boy. I don't want him scared. She'll never forgive anyone who hurts her son.”

“You figured that out from watching her from a distance, in a totally non stalker way?”

“Look at what she's been through to protect him. She's living her whole life for that little boy.”

“Ah well, one little enchantment and she'll be living her whole life foryou.”Caroline’s voice was teasing.

She couldn’t imagine what that image did for me. What it didtome.

Caroline drew in a sudden sharp intake of breath. I didn't have to see her to know that Amelia had opened the door and stepped out. Something magical sang in the air.

The hair on the back of my neck stood up, as if she wore a ghost, as her scent of rain and citrus floated to me.

“You can end this whole game,” Caroline said. “We can take her now. With the enchantment, it won't matter. You don't need to do all this maneuvering to try and make her trust you. She can even keep her son if it means that much to you.”
