“Let me do this my way, Caroline. You don't understand wolves.”

“I certainly don't understand you.” Her hand tightened on my arm, her pointed nails sinking into my skin through my sleeve. Caroline always smelled like roses, and she was standing too close to me, the smell cloying. My sharp wolf senses found her scent overbearing. “The hive is growing impatient.”

“I believe it's you who's impatient.”

“I've waited decades for a child.”

“Then you can wait another week for me to bring her in without scaring her.”

“The gentle approachwasenchanting her sister. But here she is, still running. We need a stronger solution.”

“I'll take care of it,” I promised. “I’ll take the car out of the equation, and she'll be forced back.”

Caroline sighed. “Wolf, you know I love you, but sometimes you operate by your senses and instincts when cold logic suggests an easier course of action...”

“I don't want her to stay with me because of an enchantment.”

“To stay with us?” Her voice had a slight hiss curling around theus. “Do you think she’ll choose to stay with us and keep bearing our children?”

“She might choose to stay. I've chosen to stay with you.”

“And that's not because you're afraid to be on your own? Because you wolves can't bear to be alone? Because you're scared of what you'll do without being fed regularly? Because you can’t stand not to be caged at a full moon, with all your new power?”

Fury spiked in my chest at her accusations. “I'm not afraid to be on my own.”

For lone seconds, something tense simmered between us.

“Well, I'm afraid to lose you, Wolf.” Her voice was tender, and I softened. These were the friends who had pieced me together when I was broken, who had been by my side during those early months of nightmares and bloodthirst. She sighed and patted my arm. “We can do it your way. For now.”

I nodded. “Thank you.”

Although I couldn’t see her, I had the sense of Amelia moving in the hotel room beyond. And I wondered how long the vampires would be patient.

Because I couldn’t bear the thought of scaring her.

But the clock was ticking until I took her, or they would.

CHAPTER12

Amelia

Was it Stone?Panic clawed at my throat. I looked frantically around the room, and in the blur of my thoughts, it looked just like the room where I’d been with Brennan.

Then my gaze fell to Dylan, asleep in the bed. He’d buried his face under the sheet, so just his auburn hair stuck out.

I let out a slow, shaky exhale. No member of the King pack would hurt my son. He was safe with them. I didn’t think even Stone would break down the door of my room. He would know it would terrify Dylan.

The image of Stone coming into the room to pick Dylan up, though, rose so strongly in my mind it could be a memory. I could imagine how he would lift Dylan easily into his arms and how a sleepy Dylan would rest his head on his shoulder.

And I could imagine Stone stepping over my body on the way out, with his hand cupped gently over Dylan’s eyes.

I’d seen how willing Stone was to kill when he felt it was necessary. But I hoped for the sake of the feeling I’d seen in his eyes at times that he would let me go.

But my heart still raced with fear. Because if Stone didn’t believe me….

Maybe it wasn’t Stone out there. Maybe it was Shaw or Cole or Liam. My heart rose at the thought of seeing one of them.

I shouldn’t feel so much. They weren’t mine, and they never would be. Not unless I was willing to stay in the King pack. I couldn’t do that. How long would it be before Stone found another witch? Would he ever really trust me… and with that, allow me to trusthim?
