“How did you find me?” If he found me, surely Stone would be able to find me too.

“You had a bad dream about Rose,” he said. “Your dreams are easier to get into than your head. And it let me pick up your trail. I just… followed the stars that shine for you.”

There was a sentence I would need to parse later. I didn’t want anyone in my head.

“I’m worried about my sister,” I admitted. “But how did you find me from a dream?”

“I’ll always find you,” he said, then frowned. “That was creepy again, wasn’t it?”

“My line betweencreepyandcomfortingwhen it comes to you is really starting to blur.”

I’d said it in a joking tone, but he froze, his gaze locked on my face. There was something raw and vulnerable in his voice when he asked, “Comforting?”

I wasn’t prepared to unravel that word.

“If you can see inside my head,” I began.

“Just your dreams,” Liam insisted. “I’m not trying to take anything away from you. I just had to find you, to make sure you were safe from Nathan until my brothers took care of him.”

“I’m not mad. I’m just asking, if you can see things about me, can you see about Rose? Can you figure out if this is a sickness or poison or an enchantment?”

“So there is something really wrong with her?” Liam asked. “That dream helped me find you, but I wasn’t sure if it was real or not. I just pulled on the thread and it led me to you.”

Making sense of Liam’s powers was not easy when making sense of Liam himself was also not easy.

“I’ll try,” Liam said. “I don’t know how to control the visions very well. I don’t want to disappoint you.”

I wanted to tell him that he wouldn’t disappoint me, but I couldn’t promise that. “I’m not sure if it’s safe for us to go back to the hospital. I want you to know. In case you don’t want to go… I’ll tell you everything that’s going on.”

“I’m listening,” Liam said.

His gaze was intent on my face as I told him the whole story, everything that had happened since I left the King pack.

“We’ll take care of your sister,” he said. “If I can help, I will.”

I glanced at the car again. “I’m worried Stone will use the car to track you. Is he really angry at me?”

Liam looked perplexed. “Why would he be angry at you when he’s the idiot?”

He had surprised a laugh out of me, and he looked even more perplexed as my giggles escaped and I pressed my hand to my lips. Liam was always surprising.

“That does not prevent people from getting angry.”

“I think he’s angry at himself,” Liam said thoughtfully. “as he should be.”

The thought that I might not be in danger from the King pack unfurled in my chest. It was like a huge load of tension melted off my body. I couldn’t entirely trust that Liam fully understood Stone’s intentions. But I did think that Liam understood Stone.

It was funny that Liam seemed to understand us all so well when none of us quite understood him.

But I wanted to try.

“I’ve been so scared,” I admitted, my voice coming out shaky. Why was I falling apart now?

“I’m here,” Liam held out his arms as if he wanted to hug me, then frowned. “Though I’m not sure if that’s comforting… Is it comforting? Most people are scared of me. Even in the pack. If you’re too different, people are scared of you just because. Even if they know you wouldn’t hurt them, they’re still afraid of things being awkward.”

He sounded genuinely concerned.

“It’s comforting,” I told him. I was already melting into his arms.
